Title: Weaver living and working situations in Holds
Post by: Francesca on January 09, 2008, 02:54:16 PM
Hi all.  I'm not quite sure who to ask about this, so I figured I'd ask everyone. :-)

I just created a persona who is an unmarried, Sr. Journeyman Weaver at Amber Hills Hold.  About how many weavers would there be at the Hold?  I'm thinking a Master, several Journeyman, and maybe some apprentices?  And, especially with all the refugees from Amethyst Cliff Hold, I'm assuming a Journeyman wouldn't have his own room.  So, maybe he would be sharing a small room with another Journeyman in the main area of the Hold?

Also, on the map of AHH there is a Weavers Workshop shown.  Would that be one large room with all the looms and materials, or would each Journeyman probably have his own room?

I couldn't find hardly any information about the Weavercraft on the website to answer these questions.  I'm hoping it's either hidden somewhere, or that one of you happens to know some of this from experience.

I probably have more questions, but that's it for now. =)  Any help/answers would be appreciated!

Well, I will try to answer your questions!

I would not want to set any number of how many crafters there would be (since that limits how many you can play with ;)), but I think you'd be right in saying that there would be one, or perhaps two Masters (since they have incorporated any crafter ACH had), several journeymen and apprentices.  I always thought, considering how Amber Hills is famous for its livestock, there would be an abundance of wool available which could be tithed and traded to benifit the Hold.  You can assume they'd have all the craft specialties represented since Amber Hills would supply the needs not only of their own Hold, but also smaller Holds beholden to it who might only have few weavers of their own.

I'd say there would be a few large work areas for weaving and dying, but also smaller areas where the journeymen could spread out a little and work on individual projects.  They'd most likely share the space with journeymen of like specialization.  They'd also need an area for the apprentices to practice their own skills, however this is probably just a corner of the journeymen's area so that they can keep an eye on them.  The Masters would have offices of their own.  The journeymen would most likely have just their own desk in their area and not much privacy.

This is just what I have assumed, but if you have any other ideas, I'd love to hear them!

As for where they live, the Masters and married journeymen would have cots near the Weaver shop or rooms in the main Hold of their own.  Unmarried journeymen probably would have been granted their own living space before ACH merged with the Hold, but now probably share a space with other journeymen, either of their craft or another.  There's a little bit of flexibility as to where they live exactly since refugees have probably been thrown into cots and rooms where there was a room available and not a whole of thought went into the room assignments.  So its really up to you.

Does that answer your questions for you?

And you're right, the site has very little information about the Weaving craft.  However, if you or anyone else would like to submit an article for the FAQ, it is worth 25 marks per article (HINT HINT ;))
