Title: Good thoughts needed
Post by: Mikel on May 08, 2007, 05:07:56 PM
My dad is going to be having major surgery in the next few weeks. Surgery for perihilar (near the liver) bile duct cancer, the most common site of bile duct cancer, also requires great skill. The operation is quite extensive. Usually part of the liver must be removed, along with the bile duct, gallbladder, and sometimes part of the pancreas and small intestine. Then the surgeon must connect the remaining ducts to the small intestine. This is also not an easy operation for the patient. About 25% to 45% of patients have serious complications with this procedure, and 5% to 10% of patients die.

The doctor suggest that my sister and I should be there.

In the last six months he has had major back surgery, and a number of biopsies trying to figure out what he has now.

Still no date for the surgery, Mikel?
You know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

No, no date as of yet.

Mom and dad are going back to UNC/Chapel Hill on Monday to discuss it.  Mom will try to make sure there will be time for me to get there.

Sending lot's of good thoughts. Considering that my husband's elderly relative passed away due liver cancer just few days ago, this hits awfully close to the homebase....
