Title: Am I turning into Jane?
Post by: Vix on May 06, 2007, 05:10:47 PM
Ok, I don't make lists of what posts are upcoming -- though I refer to those that Jane makes -- and I can't really keep track of what month it is.

However, I just made a spreadsheet of my personas -- PC, NPC, and those in my mind -- showing birthdates, physical features, crafts, family members, etc. This is intended to aid in creating new characters, so that I don't keep repeating traits.

Does anyone else do this?

I believe you are turning into Bree.  I'm lists, linear checklists, plans, and schedules.

Bree is databases and spreadsheets.

When I'm organised I have my ducks in a row - Bree would have hers in a matrix.

The latest approved copy of each persona sheet simply sits in an email folder called 'Characters' and previous itterations are discarded.  No extra spreadsheets for me!

Er - just remembered.  Characters with complex backgrounds do have extra 'Notes' email files.  R'haran, for instance, has a complex sort of history and I needed to know his age at each major event in the Triad scenario.  His has a timeline in his Notes file.

Similarly, the riverboat has a schedule.  And family tree.

Oh sh*t. :laughing5:

Have you considered professional help?

I create my new personas in a word document.  Then they sit there until I get them approved.  I have about four unapproved characters sitting in my folder right now.  I should get working.

I know nothing about spreadsheets nor how to use them for personas.

However, I do have lots of text files with unfinished or draft persona sheets, as well as detailed plans for how I want to torment a particular persona.

Okay, confession time here...I might even be more demented!   I have a matrix like Vix described but I aslo have columns for brief summary of current posts story/lines and potential/future SL.  Particularly with NPCs, I want to be able to keep track.    And I'm not generally an organized person...

I also have the text files many people have described with various character sketches/persona ideas who I have not yet submitted.

I usually copy over the text notes to my Word files of ongoing coposts so that I can refer to them.

In addition, I have separate folders within my Triad folder for possible personas, my personas, my posts, ready-to-post, and ongoing. The possible persona file containes a separate document file for each NPC and as I post something significant about that persona (or any other), I add a note to the document.

All of this organization is because I can't keep it sorted out in my head.  Last night I finished a post and couldn't remember what the persona's signature should look like, so I created a file of sigs for all of my characters, PC and NPC.

As to the spreadsheet, I've just started it and am still entering characters.

And Mikel: at least my personas have names that can be pronounced without spraining my tongue.[/i]

I have a small database in Access.  But its in need of updating.

O.M.G! Vix!!!

You are becoming OCD hun.

I know a trainee psychologist, but I'm not sure if she's ready for you yet!!!

I've always been OCD, dear -- but I'm selectively OCD. My desk at work shows no sense of organization, but it does exhibit my packrat tendencies. At home . . . well, it's been held in check by having apartmentmates.

Huh!  OCD is just a term coined by envious, disorganised people to devalue perfectly normal behaviour that they can't match. :laughing5:

(Except, perhaps, in the case of that fridge thing with Bree.)

The fridge thing takes OCD to a whole new level. I think that's called TTDWTTMDCD*
