Title: Copost Replies
Post by: Jane on April 09, 2007, 07:47:25 PM
Just a note to let people know that I reply to every copost within 24 hours of it arriving here.  (Often sooner than that.)

If anybody coposting with me doesn't get a reply within 24 hours they should resend the email.

I don't resend if I don't get an answer because I don't want to hound people who are busy with their lives ... but please, *do* hound me if you haven't had a reply (because I don't have a life).  It'll be a missing email - sure as a sure-thing.

One of my coposters is getting this sort of message:

this message was delayed xx hours -- unable to deliver

when she sends email to me.

Is anybody else having a similar problem when sending mail my way?

Gee, Jane -- I know that you're hoarding those marks, but maybe you should give up 10 of them for a Triadweyrs.org email address!

I have four email addresses I use everyday, already.  Five sounds like one too many, to me.

Does it work by web mail?

It works both by webmail, and can be set up quite easily to work through an existing g-mail account. When I'm at school, I send/receive my triad e-mail through my gmail account. :)

I'd need a Triad address *and* a gmail one?  ::faints::

Well, no. You could check the triad WITHOUT gmail. Gmail is just handy. LOL

How does that work?  Do you think it works for Thunderbird?  Do people with Triad email addresses ever lose email?  (I don't think I lose a *lot* and I don't want to add complexity to my life if it isn't going to be ... well, perfect.)

And the reason I am following this up is that I have 'under action' coposts with *nine* writers (yes, every writer has a little folder of their own), and this morning there was NOT ONE copost reply in my in box.

Options:

* Complete email failure on the part of my ISP.

* Something really good on tv in the US last night.

* Everybody is ignoring me.

:laughing5:

And so, I'm looking for more coposts.  For d21 onwards, and for a good reason.  (We have to be advancing some plot or character developement in the copost.)  Any volunteers - with ideas?

Okay, how does the Triad email work?  I still don't get how it will bypass my ISP email department (which surely must be the problem).

I have lots of coposts waiting for replies, but yours is not one of them. In fact, I've received another of those "tried to deliver" notices.

Yes, but that was the other day.
Today your ISP doesn't like us.

My ISP still likes Cali.

I have no more ideas but if this topic goes on any longer it will finance the Triad email address for me.

You don't connect through your ISP email account to access the Triad one, it's like downloading stuff from a website, sorta..

But you do send it through your ISP. If you have probs, Clancey or Bree (or even me) can help you set it up through your email program.  Though I haven't used Thunderbird, I'm assuming its not _that_ much diff from OE.   :tongue3:

Thunderbird is very easy to setup, and is what I use for my non-club mail. (I use Sylpheed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sylpheed) for my club mail because it allows me to be a tad more neurotic about how things display. ;)

But I can help you get that set up! Will get your e-mail up and going right now, even!

I have never installed anything apart from Windoze, so I am a bit reluctant to do it now.  The last time anything major was done to this PC, Mel's ex was in charge, and he's a major geek, so I trusted him.  Don't have as much trust in myself.  :(

It seems to be working okay.

I shall send the last copy I have of all the outstanding coposts to my coposters from my new address and they can all reply (to triad - not xtra).

Of course, I'm now away for 24 hours for the book fair, but I do expect at least *nine* coposts to appear my inbox when I log in at lunch time tomorrow.

   Thanks for your help, Bree, and for your advice Kaysea and Vix.

In the past three days I've installed and re-installed and re-installed. Talk about geeky -- I even had to pull the hard drive and put it back in (hey -- it's a big undertaking for me) and have some other driver on its way that needs replaced.

Any opinions on alternatives to IE? I've contemplated Firefox, but so far haven't acted on it.

:hearts: Firefox

but the kids (Aimee especially) raves about Opera as well.

Any multi tabbed browser is great - except IE which continually glitches for me.

Though I am having problems with Firefox not doing what is should with URL's that appear in the same window, if that's makes any sense? eg: name="#" / a href="#" type URL's...

If you can hold off until I graduate, I bet I can conquer it. :D

As for browsers... FIREFOX! I can't live without it! My firefox plays my music, checks my gmail, tells me the weather, ftps, deals with my LJ, shows me the temperature AND helps me debug all of my code!

I love Firefox soooo much!

Plus I always have 8-10 tabs open. ;)

And even better!  The mail just downloaded into my Thunderbird inboxes and filtered into the right folders just like normal mail.  I must have done something right in the set up!

Firefox!!! I recently test ran five browsers, and that was my winner (followed by Opera, which is also good and my brother swears by. For me it basically boils down to the navigation button setup -I kept hitting new page when I was trying to go back). The new IE with tabs is okay, but I also had issues with it glitching...

Ok...I was curious about Thunderbird, and went and downloaded it.  Got my Triad and the old 1964 downloading into it.  But one problem.... In OE I can stop the ">" appearing whenever I hit Reply.  But I can't find anywhere in TB2 to get rid of the damned things.  they drive me nuts and its a hassle to copy and paste each time I want to reply to a copost.

Any suggestions?

I like the idea of keeping my emails separate, OE for normal emails from friends and family, and TB for the postings/writing clubs.

Also, I can't get the spell checker to work, it doesn't have anything registered as a dictionary?!?!?!
Title:
Post by: Bree on April 20, 2007, 10:34:03 AM
Alas, that is why I switched over to Sylpheed, Kaysea. I got tired of forwarding messages in Thunderbird to avoid the > curse and after several hours of googling, I started installing alternate e-mail programs to find one I could customize.

Sylpheed you pretty much what you want it to be. You can decide exactly what is included in a reply/forward by creating a template. It can be a bit annoying for the average user (who doesn't want to have to go and type %m or ?d{Date: %d }?f{From: %f }?t{To: %t }?c{Cc: %c) but for me, I love it. :D
Title:
Post by: Avery on April 20, 2007, 10:48:31 AM
I hav an easy way to get around it in Thunderbird. I just copy the email and THEN hit reply, paste the copied part, write the new part.

Of course, I got into that habit from selectively copy/pasting to create replies in round robin, but it works effectively in full post!

And it really isn't that hard to copy the email, hit reply, paste+type. Once you're use to it it's quick!
Title:
Post by: Bree on April 20, 2007, 11:08:37 AM
I am too lazy for even that, Avril! :p Sad, but true.

Of course, when you have 37 coposts to reply to, even that extra work can seem to add up, I suppose. ;)

Like Avril I've never worried about the > because I open an copost reply - Ctrl A - Ctrl C - hit the reply button (with quoted text turned OFF in account settings) - Ctrl V in empty reply window.  It's so automatic now I hardly ever think about it.

The dictionary is an extension or add on from Mozilla but READ THE INSTRUCTIONS about how to load it before you click the very obvious link.  Clicking the very obvious link is the wrong thing to do!
