OK, I landed on my profile page by clicking the wrong icon, and the first thing I saw was Marks:666 - it was enough to make me go running for the Forums to find somewhere to increase my marks simply to get off that particular number.

So that got me thinking, what makes you go and touch wood, or turn around three times and then spit over your shoulder??
Try throwing salt over your left shoulder, that should ward off all evil luck. (or danruff if you don't have salt at hand).

Other then that, I can't really remember any of my superstitions off the top of my head.
I have to tell people "Drive Safely" every time they leave my apartment, because if I don't, they'll obviously drive into a tree and it will be all my fault.
I'm a bit the same myself Bree.
I have to tell family members I love them ebfore they leave the house, especially on long trips because I always fear it may be the last time I see them.
Morbid and superstitious at the same time. Go me!

I think the only realy superstitious thing I do is pick up pennies... you know the whole "find a penny pick it up, all day long you'll have good luck"? (I added that just in case someone hadn't heard it before!) Even though I don't really think that pennies are lucky, I would hate to miss out if they were!
I'd consider finding any money lucky.

I do not know if it is a superstition or not, but when dressing I always put right sock on before left, right shoe first, right pants leg... You get the idea

I'm actually a little afraid of flying (which is really annoying since I have to do it a lot). Whenever I'm getting on the plane I always touch the outer skin of it and say a quick prayer just before I walk through the door. There have been a couple times my heart skipped a beat when I wondered if I forgot. I don't know, I think it makes me feel like I have at least SOME measure of control.
I also clean my apartment from top to bottom before going off on a trip where I know I'll be flying. Mostly its because Murphy's Law would say that if I were going to die on a plane, it would be the time I left my apartment trashed and whoever came in to pack up my stuff would look around and think "Dang, whoever knew she was such a slob!"

I touch wood constantly when someone says something that could herald bad luck (ex. "as long as the car doesn't crash!") and if there isn't any wood, I say it and feel better.
I don't walk under ladders. Black cats crossing my path make me smile - yay good luck! Everyone else says it's unlucky, but that wasn't the way I was brought up. I don't want to drive a green car and I always feel somewhat nervous when in one - they're unlucky (this is an odd one that my Mum passed on, which she got from her Scottish granny). I cross my fingers to make things I hope for happen, or at least increase the odds. I don't allow peacock feathers in my house because they're unlucky (which is sad because I love them - they're so pretty! It's another weird Scottish thing, I think). And I, of course, toss salt over my left shoulder if I spill it. :)
I'm the KING of superstitions. Just not the ones everyone expects. I think Black cats are good luck (mostly because I like to be opposite the majority). But I believe in signs of all sorts, and the supernatural and all that jazz. Like take these last two days for instance: I've had this odd feeling in the pit of my stomach that SOMETHINGS going to happen, or somethings missing or hasn't happen that should have. Its such a weird feeling.
But I ALWAYS cross my fingers when I'm wishing for something. I do the wish on a star thing (Starlight, star bright, first star I see tonight...) every time I'm outside at night. There are a bunch of others that I can't think of right now, probably just because I do them subconsciously.

I think the one I do most often though, is simply knocking on wood, if someone mentions something verbally that I really don't want to happen. For example, if someone says something like 'It's Friday, so just our luck the boss will come up with some BS report we have to do so we have to stay late...' .... I knock on the closest wooden item I can find!
I do the yellow light thing... mostly out of habit from High School, though. I can't seem to stop myself. :p
Here are a couple superstitions I know in Japan (though I certainly don't follow them...) Some are particular to certain regions:
* Don't kill a spider at night becuase its is bad luck.
* Kill a spider in the morning for good luck.
* Don't whistle at night or you will call out the snakes.
* Put salt on either side of your door to ward off evil spirits (interesting how salt plays into several cultures, eh?)
* Unmarried women/girls should take their "Girl's Day" dolls down on Girls Day (March 3rd) or they will never get married
* Carve your name (and anyone who is with you) into a cuccumber before you go swiming in a lake or river to ward off the KAPPAs (water spirits that are said to drown people and suck their innerds through their anus) and throw it in the lake as an offering
* Don't go swimming in rivers or lakes in August or your ancestors will drag you down under the water (I know for sure that one is region specific)
* Don't stick your chopsticks down into your rice bowl or food - that's how you leave food for dead people
* Don't pass food from chopsticks to chopsticks - that's how they pass a dead person's bones to each other during a traditional Japanese funeral
* The numbers 4 and 9 are unlucky numbers - 4 because the kanji can be read as "shi" which means death, and 9 because it can be read as "ku" which means pain
* Red is a lucky color
* Don't cut your nails at night or you will not be with your parents when they die
And that's all I can remember right now! Funny what superstitions countries have!

Eimi there is a simialr superstition on ships... no whistling because it will bring on a storm ("whistling up the wind")!
Actually, I'm not a very superstitious person. I've always had black cats, so that's not an issue. I've stepped on cracks and my mother never had a broken back. Friday the 13th doesn't really weird me out (and there will be one of those in less than 2 weeks!). I occasionally knock on wood, but that's it.
On the other hand, I don't feel that all of that makes me a very logical person. I just don't worry about such things -- there are much more concrete situations for me to worry about.
I'm not sure how superstitious I am, but I do believe that good and bad things happen in threes, so when things go from bad to worse I'm always waiting for the last hit. Murphy's law is also a ruling factor of my universe!
I also talk to, encourage, and threaten my electronics as if they were people, carry a lucky stone in my purse (this is actually done by my whole family though, even my brother has one in his wallet), and have my doors, windows, and mirrors blessed to prevent bad feelings from entering or being multiplied through reflection (again, a family thing, although I've read about it elsewhere). If I feel nervous suddenly for no reason in a room, I tend to check a mirror to see if there is something there that I can't see otherwise.
Other that than, I don't think I'm really superstitious. I watch where I step, but it's not a crisis if I step on a crack, step on a bug, break a mirror, go under a ladder, or have a black cat cross my path (actually, I own one so this would be a bad thing to be afraid of!). Although I know a lot of people who knock on wood, I tend to avoid saying things that might cause people to do so, although I have been known to knock if someone else reminds me. I think that crossing your fingers is a cowards way out of taking responsibility for their words, and salt over the shoulder seems like a waste of my favorite french fry topping. :alien:
I take the comment back about not being very superstitious. My father just called and asked me to check which direction the potted tree was growing.
My parents had a small tree on either side of the altar when they married, and the belief is that whenever we're about to move again (which is frequently), the tree starts growing in the direction we're moving.
The sad part is that this is often considered the only reliable indication of where we're moving, as the military has changed our orders so often that it makes as much sense as anything else.
Actually, there is another one related to the tree -as long as it flourishes so will my parent's marriage. This dates from the time it was at my grandfathers, and it grew so tall that he took a chainsaw to it before it hit the ceiling. The day after my parents started having marriage troubles, which lasted until it started growing again...
I almost forgot about the eyelash thing! If I find that one of my eyelashes has fallen out I always make a wish on it then blow it away... I think that one goes back to high school. I'm not even certain if it is a popular tradition... I just know that another girl taught it to me.
Oh! I just remembered another one... Full Moons are always _weird_ times. Totally random, odd things seem to happen.
I just remembered a big one with me. You know the old sailor saying: "Red sky at night sailors delight, red sky in morning sailors take warning." Right? Well that one has proved true to me every time. It may not have been a natural storm, but something big has always happened when the morning sky is a rosy hue.

That's weather prediction, not superstition. We have a saying here in Finland that translates roughly to: Morning dawn wets the shirt, evening dawn rises the wind. (meaning the rosy red dawn, not the usual ones.)

I love full moons. There's one outside tonight. And last night when we were saying goodbye to Mel, Cailee was looking up over the top of the house and saying "Hello Mr Moon." It was so funny. She loves the stars and the moon.

I don't know what it is... I work in retail sometimes (I have many talents) and I swear that there are Moon People. The weirdos who only come out near a full moon. They tend to either talk your ear off about bizzare things or get really, really angry over nothing and completely over-react, or simply set off your weirdo detector.
