Title: Complaining!
Post by: PastMember on March 01, 2007, 11:57:44 AM
We don't have anywhere to do it here!

Not so much complaining about the club or SLs or anything - complaining about life. Sharing woes and throwing pity parties.

For example: My boss demanded that I completely redesign the template we're using for the sites. Well, I'm not a web designer. I know scant-little about it and everything I know, I've taught myself. I certainly don't know how to do all the fancy code that causes the pages to pull the info needed from the database.

My boss basicly bullies me into promising it would only take two days - though I was very clear that it would only be my disign part that would be the two days - the more difficult coding was something someone else would have to do and I didn't know how long it would take cause I don't know how to do it. He agrees and all is spiffy.

Until.

My boss sent an email to a client saying that we were making a new template and we'd have their school entered on this new template and ready for her approval by the end of the week. Today is Thursday.

The template hadn't been approved yet.
The coding I don't know how to do hasn't been done yet.
Her school is near the bottom of the list of schools I'm working on anyway and I was told to stop everything till the template is complete.

I emailed him and told him the deadline for her school wasn't going to be met. So then, he's running around freaking out and demanding that it be done and done yesterday because he promised the client - but then he's making me change all sorts of stuff about it even though both the IT guys (who are real web designers - especially one of them, he's a freakin wizard. I was quite pleased when he said he liked it)

Maybe my boss shouldn't be making promises to clients without checking his facts first. Or for god's sake OVERESTIMATE the time! Instead of telling her it'll get done in two days, tell her a week. That way, if it's done in four days, it'll be that much more impressive.

Jackass. Can I say Jackass here?

So, anyone else got something they want to complain about?

I'll join in boss type woes - I just planned out my workload for the next three works, includung 4 days of training, only to be told to drop everything (and 1 training course) for a project that might not happen!!!!

Plus I have a nasty cough

I want to go climbing but my climbing partner is having CSI night with his buddies (and the other one is at an art class that I'd like to take myself) and I'm too intimidated by the rock jocks to go by myself!

Also, the government is holding my invoice for 3-4 weeks and hasn't paid me yet, which means I have NO MONEY and I really hope that my rent cheque doesn't bounce. Also, some veggies would be nice.

And my roses are dying!! Woe! :(

Edit: I think I violated the spirit of the topic here. The above is more of a whine than a complain. Ooops.

I have to go to a funeral . . . on Saturday. It couldn't have been on a weekday to give me a day off. Nope. Saturday. So I had to arrange for someone else to head the Odyssey of the Mind judging team since I won't be there.

And I ache. Yesterday I had restraint training at work and my legs hurt from that. And now a long day at work (evening family event) and moving tables and chairs and even more aches.

I've never done this, however I did do Future Problem Solvers (an international program) ever since 6th grade. You get given a one-page scenario sheet on a topic. It's a future scene and sets a stage involving a location, a time, and a problem. Your team's job is to follow the 6 stage process, which involves finding the problems with the scenario, finding the biggest problem, finding solutions, rating solutions, picking the best solution and creating an action plan. My team has advanced to States level 3 times. Never to Internationals :(

In my high school years I started doing scenario writing, which was an FPS branch. You picked one of the 5 topics for the year and wrote a short story set at least 25 years in the future. It had to be related to your topic and under 1,500 words. I won second place in Florida, sixth place in Florida, third place Florida, and ninth place National, my 9th-12th years respectively.

I did OM, but Speech was my baby. I started going to varsity speech meets when I was 12, and even went the state competition in Creative Expression (a free for all where you wrote your own speech on any topic and had to perform it with the use of a chair as a prop. *g*) when I was 16. I didn't place, but being in the top 16 in Minnesota was good enough for me. *g*

My senior year I was the Captain and then the co-Coach of my school's team. I actually ended up taking the team to meets once or twice as Captain when the real Captain had something come up. :D I started my bossy days early, obviously.

I did everything, though. OM, Speech, Knowledge Bowl, Mock Trial, German Club, Spanish Club, Yearbook, Drama... I really liked activities. :D

I do a few. OM, Drama, Chamber Singers, Band (except for this year due to scheduling problems), RFA (Regional Fine Arts), Civil Rights Team, Amnesty, um... Triad. :) (It SHOULD be a extracurricular activity.  Its the funnest of all.)  On an OM note my team went to Worlds my freshman year and got one tenth of a point lower than the winning team in our long term problem last year.  If we had scored higher on our Spontaneous we would have won. ow well, this year...

I was in the Marching Band freshman year (competition field marching and best in the state that year) and i was manager for the Track Team for a year since a bunch of my friends were on it and begged me to do it.

Yeah... that was it...  I really didn't do a whole lot either.  Then again, its kinda hard to get into all that kind of stuff when you go to four high schools in four cities in four years ;)

I was a total geek.

My activities:
OM
Academic Bowl (AL)
It's Academic (MD)
School/County/State Honors Choir
Madrigals
Yearbook
Newspaper
SGA (was VP my senior year)
Shakespeare Players
Art Club
National Art Honor Society
IB Art

And that was just the school crap. I was also taking riding lessons twice a week, plus RP'ing.

Extracirricular activities make school more fun, I think.

I was in the Art Club in highschool... unsurprisingly, the Art Club always won the Best Float award in the Homecoming Parade.

In college I was in the PTK and was always real active... went to meetings, helped out with fundraisers and events, did the volunteer work and so on. It was fun.

Here's a complaint, unrelated to that: Why's it got to be warm and sunny during the week, when I'm stuck in an office for the better part of the day, but it's supposed to be gross and stormy all this weekend? How's that fair? Not that I get weekends off or anything... it's more the principle of the thing. lol

The Science Channel answered that a few months ago.  Cities are filled during the week, making the air in and above them warmer.  On weekends, when those areas are less populated and fewer vehicles heating the air, it  cools and allows the water vapor of condense and fall upon your head.

Good lord I am suck a geek

My boss is a giant idiot.

Tell me, friends, if your servers have been hacked and untold havoc has been caused (deleting of templates, files, whole sections of database missing), which would you rather have happen?

Choice A: You are down for the entire day, meaning you lose a day's money, but your system is rebuilt much more securely making it highly unlikely such a thing would happen again anytime in the near future.

Choice B: You only lose half a day, and everything that can be reuploaded from the backups is, BUT your system is exactly as it was. So the next guy who decides to hack basicly has a welcome mat.

I know what I would choose.

 :offtheair:
Title:
Post by: Avery on March 20, 2007, 10:14:28 AM
I'd pick A. Clearly. Losing one day's money now can prevent you from losing more money in the future if it happens again because you didn't make it secure when you could.
Title:
Post by: Patrick on March 20, 2007, 03:02:07 PM
Yup definitely A.
Title:
Post by: PastMember on March 20, 2007, 03:09:54 PM
And it turns out that the F-ups caused by the hack were so bad that we didn't get all the way back up in one day ANYWAY. So... bah.

I'm so freaking mad, angry, stressed, pissed, aggrivated, you name it.

I'm so sorry to here that.  Tuesday's suck in general.  I can take monday's, thursday's you name it.  But give me a tuesday and I fall apart, nothing ever goes right.  Take to day for instance.  I slept through my alarm and both my sister and I had to get to school early, and I shower in the morning before she gets up.  SO my mom was hounding me to get out of the bathroom faster  even when she KNEW I was going as fast as I could.  And then my sister was whining all the way to the Middle school that she'd be late even though we SAW at LEAST three people go in after her.  Then I couldn't find my OM coach to give back our Team Sign so she could put it with the rest of it.  But the ONLY day she doesn't come in early had to be today, so I left in infront of her door.  Then I had Early Morning Rehearsal for Chamber Singers, which basically always sucks anyways because I have to sing falsetto at seven in the morning.  Then I missed a Chem class so I'm way behind in that.  I have to make up a quiz and TWO posters, and a lab.  And I missed my bus because I had to stay after and didn't know the new bus schedule.  Yeah tuesday's just suck.

When I was in college and it was finals week, my roommates and I might have gotten 6 hours of sleep altogether the entire week. We were drinking coffee made with caffinated water and drinking energy drinks and cokes and so on. We stopped short of taking Mini-Thins or No-Doze, but only just. *G* And of course, nothing illegal.

I remember during my Alegebra Exam, I was so hopped up on caffine that my hands were shaking. But I tell you what.... that was the ONLY time in my life I've made an A on a math test! lol That grade pushed my math grade from a C to a B too, so I got to graduate with high honors and on the deans list.

All cause of caffine! lol

But we did a lot of drinking too. My roommate invented (or claimed she did) a drink called the 'Pink Panty Pull-Me-Down.' It consisted of a large bottle of vodka (just how big a bottle, of course, depended on how drunk you wanted to be), a 1 liter bottle of Sprite, half a pitcher of pink lemonade and a cup of sugar. Twas tasty.

Though I never took the drinking as far as my roommates did. One of them in particular, we had to take turns waking up in the night to make sure she was still on her side in case she vomited in the night at least three times a week. During Finals week, the three of us sat around the kitchen table and discussed a rule in the student handbook stating that if one's roommate died, one automatically passed the sememster... we discussed, mostly joking... mostly... NOT checking on her and just seeing what might happen. But of course, we were joking... mostly. So we kept on checking on her. lol

When I was at uni and test weeks rolled around the Starbucks on the edge of campus would stay open 24 hours.  All of us who regulared the place all night got to know each other pretty well.  Around 3am the sugar and the exhaustion and the caffine would start getting to us and we each picked our favorite song on the playlist and when it came on we'd get up and dance around the room.  Mine was "As the Rain", but we all looked foward to my friend Steph's "Sexual Healing" dance.  She was our major source of comic relief in the wee hours of the night!  And then when the tests started I'd grab a quad-shot and run off to class.

Back to complaining:
It's not even 5 a.m. here and I've been awake since before 3:00. The problem? Pain.

Due to the Pit Bull Incident, I took off work Tuesday and went to the doc to have my knee checked. She took a look, said, "Won't help to x-ray it b/c it's probably ligament damange. You need an MRI."
Ok, they scheduled one for me and off I went to the imaging center, lay still for 40 minutes, hoping my back wouldn't start spasming, and as I left was told, "The results will be faxed to your doc in 24 to 48 hours."
During the drive home I puzzled over this, since I hadn't been told what to do about the injury. I arrived home, called the doctor's office, was told that the question would be referred to the doctor. An hour or so later a nurse called, said the doc wouldn't know what treatment to use until the results were back, so take ibuprofen and go back to work.

Yesterday I went back to work, tried very hard not to put my knee at risk in any way, but still was kicked in the foot (jarred the whole way up my leg) and a 70-pound 4-year-old decided to push off against my knee when he was rising from sitting on the floor. I went home in pain, went to bed early b/c I really wasn't feeling well.

At 8:30, the phone rang -- the nurse telling me that the MRI showed Baker cyst, arthritis, and possible ligament tear (wasn't that the reason for tests). Recommendation: follow the prescribed course of treatment and keep all follow-up appointments. I told her that there were no follow-ups scheduled, so she decided to leave a note for the doc to recommend for that. Then I pointed out that the "treatment" was ibuprofen and return to work -- which brought on dead silence. Finally she asked "no other medication? Is it still bothering you?"  She has placed a note for the doctor to review the treatment plan, but what now? Do I work today or not?
Title:
Post by: Patrick on March 22, 2007, 03:47:38 AM
I'd say not work.  If you're in enough pain that you needed to see a doctor about it I wouldn't go to work.  Especially if you risk compounding the injury.

On a complaining note.  Its 6:30 AM and I'm getting yelled at.

I'm on this fursona RP because one of my friends at school said they desperately wanted members so I joined.  It's not my favorite thing on the planet and I haven't exactly done massive amounts of fursona Role Playing, but I know the basics and the world is just AMAZING.  They've been working on it for three years and it shows.

So I joined.  It's ok and you can tell the people are very good Role players, but one of the members (there are only 4 counting myself) can be very rude.  I've been trying to find a way to bring a human like character into the storyline, and thought I had an good idea that might work.  I told my friend first and though she wasn't 100% on board she told me she'd run it by the other member (because they work as a pair to figure out whats canon).  Well either that person has had a VERY bad home life or they're just a b**** because she FLIPPED OUT.

They RP in a round robin style.  Which is ok for email I guess but it doesn't much work for a message board RP I think.  And I want to feel included and a part of it all.  So she asks for ideas on how to get the plot working again.  So I offer my two cents and say on the off note some of my favorite things to write about.  She basically shoots down ALL my ideas, and my Role Playing style and the fact that I miss opposable thumbs.  I mean I don't mind being told an idea doesn't work, but do you have to be so mean about how you say it?

I don't like the way I keep getting shot down, but I don't want to leave because every new member they get leaves (and now I see why.)  so what should I do?  Should I stay and live through the criticism or should I leave like I keep getting told to do when I try to be active in the club?
Title:
Post by: Vix on March 22, 2007, 04:02:13 AM
Patrick, be very honest: tell them that you want to make it work b/c they have a good premise but that you are on the brink because of the attitudes expressed toward you, particularly the insults that should have no place in an rpg. Either they can work it out, or you can leave, but at least they wouldn't be able to say that they don't know why members keep leaving.
Title:
Post by: Bree on March 22, 2007, 04:57:54 AM
I agree with Vix. Honesty is good. Polite honesty is the best. :D As long as you don't point it out in a triumphant or condescending manner, (Like: "I see now why all of your members quit!") you can at least know that you tried.

And if they can't handle that... well, they're never going to have a lot of members. ;) I can't even count the number of criticisms I get in a week. :D But it's part of running a club... you've got to try your best to adapt.
Title:
Post by: Yvonne on March 22, 2007, 11:17:21 AM
I'm going to third Vix's advice. My main rule of thumb when it comes to pbems is that they are HOBBIES. They should be FUN. If they are NOT FUN, then there is NO POINT. If there are problems that create drama, the best thing to do is try to discuss it to see if it can be worked out, and if not, then... well, for your friend's sake you tried.

Sometimes you need to look out for yourself, because nobody else will. :P

My own complaint:

So, I get called on the carpet this morning.  Apparently the Vendor Held Desk agents are annoyed with Senior Support in general, and me in particular.

The complaint against me, from all 3 call centers is that I am rude.  The primary example of my rudeness appears to be my perceived annoyance when they escalate a case to me without UserId's, Passwords or duplication steps.  In other words, the very things they are expected to have in place for me when they call Senior Support.

Heaven forbid I hurt their feelings by asking them to do their jobs

This afternoon we get this, in an e-mail:
"From this point on we would like to focus on feedback related to communication issues or poor customer service skills only, feedback regarding agents that don't follow process, or don't know the technical answers are no longer needed"

Not as bad this time it doesn't seem, from what I'm overhearing from the IT guys. They didn't delete anything this time. They just uploaded a lot of stuff that does things I'm not technical enough to know about... but basicly they're hijacking our servers and using them to host spyware and phishing sites in place of our own sites - and part of the problem is that we've got SO MANY sites that it takes forever to hunt them all down. But at least this time they didn't delete what was already there!

Hopefully THIS will make boss-man decide that hey, a little effort spent in securing our systems is effing worth it!

I'm going to complain about school!

I've spent nearly 16 hours total on this stupid assignment, and I'm maybe 40% of the way done. MAYBE.

I am so worn down from this!

My final class was much the same: it was only a 4-week course and even though I had worked on my project in other classes, the culmination of it was miserable. I'd go to work, come home, spend 5 to 6 hours in classwork, and then 12 hours each weekend day. I was sooooo glad when that course was done. Of course, when that was finished, so was the degree, so it was even sweeter.

Ok, here's my complaint: I started physical therapy yesterday. Two to three times each week for at least the next three weeks, I will have to spend an hour with the PT. In addition, I need to spend 1/2 hour twice each day exercising the leg at home. All of this is followed by ice massage until my knee is numb. This takes chunks of my time that I don't really want to give.
And it hurts!

At the moment, I'm not very kindly disposed to dogs or dog owners.

Just remember that not all dogs are bad, nor are all dog owners!

We have 3 dogs, all collies. We just put in a fenced in yard for them and before that they were never allowed off leash... but I know where you are coming from. Our neighbors are really irresponsible with their dogs and never keep them tied up. One of our friends delievers UPS and he hates coming to our neighborhood because their dogs get in the way of his truck and just generally cause trouble.
