Title: A Plea from the Timeliner
Post by: emma on February 27, 2007, 11:11:55 AM
Please, please, please.... *does puppy dog eyes*

Seriously, when you list the names of personas in the 'Who' Line can you check they are spelt as on the website - I copy and paste when I'm adding the stories to the site, and it causes me to  :banghead:   which is not good!

It only takes a moment to do this, and makes me happy :)

Making Emma happy is a goodness

An additional note from the mean webgirl:

If you can't consistantly spell your personas names correctly, we will put you back on mentorship until you start paying better attention. It is a fairly easy thing to check, and not doing so makes Emma's life VERY difficult!

And we don't want Emma to break her head on the wall. ;)

No that would be classified as a BAD thing.
Title:

I really hope that when Emma says that she means that people are spelling their co-poster's personas wrong... not their own!  :bounce:

Was it me? I'm such a horrid speller, I wouldn't put it past myself to misspell my own characters' names!  :tropf:

Actually, Vix... you sorta suck at it.

I mean, I'm just saying. Did I not just approve two posts for you this morning? As far as lurking goes... that's not what I'd consider a success.

No credit for the timeline and no persona sheet = lurking.
Ok, perhaps it's not perfect lurking, but it's been a slow week.

Thanks for finding the bug! :D

Hey now, it's not a problem if you can't PRONOUNCE them!

I wouldn't want to pronounce Zpx all the time either, but tis quite simple to spell. :D

Well, that just depends on if you speak German or not.

Which I do. ;)

Which means Mikel never would have snuck that name past me! :p

Ich glaube, dass es nicht so leicht werden, wenn er das nocheinmal versucht!

Avril, in general Mikel goes to babblefish.com to find words that are related to something important to his persona in whatever language sounds good. Then he names them that.

Therefore Gebackstuck was a wonderful name for a baker.

All my personae names mean something, at  least to me.

Am I alone in just making up random combinations of syllables for names? The only requirement I have is that I can pronounce it. lol
Title:
Post by: Patrick on February 28, 2007, 05:54:21 PM
I'm always able to pronounce my names too.  I've had very few names that have had any real meaning, I did it on accident once, but the name didn't match the character at all.

I tend to use a name generator (http://rinkworks.com/namegen/) when I actually get around to making up characters. Of course, I've also been known to jot down random town names from road signs or glance through staff directories for ideas. If something strikes me, I'll use it somewhere.

Yes.
And actually, it's "contrarily" rather than "conversely."

To stray off this tangent.  I also use my graphing calculator to make names.  It's lots of fun!  You Alpha lock the calculator then close your eyes and press random buttons.  When you've typed a bit you open your eyes and take out the stuff that doesn't make sense.  Then you use the letters on the screen to make up a name.  Thats how Ioporol (I'poro) came into existence, and Foroth, and Kouna, and... well I think thats it but a LOT of my names are made that way.  And its easy because whenever I'm bored in class I have my calculator, so I just pull it out and start making names.  I then write them down for later.  I have a list thats about fifty names long.

Except Patrick. I have never else heard of using a calculator. Patrick wins! :D

I almost always choose names with some kind of meaning. Sometimes they're friends names, characters from my novel, random syllables, sometimes they're foreign words, or whatever.

I don't know what method I use most.  For NPCs I usually just hit the keys on the keyboard and see what I get and play with it.  Or I look around the room for words and start combining them into something that makes sense (that's how I got M'tone - a Modern English dictionary and a textbook by Millstone).

I've done the town name thing too (and I'll give anyone THREE posts if they can pick out two town names I have used for names   :flower: ) (except those people that I actually TOLD the names to cause that's just cheating)

I like irony in my character names. :D Sarian was derived from something that meant 'chaste' or 'celibate'. Fielton is a tender healer.

Dyaera was how many vowels I could shove into one word. *pounds keyboard*

Sometimes I think I've been very creative, and then I'll reread a book and find out that Kenza was actually a very minor character who showed up once in a Melanie Rawn book, and I'll be totally depressed at my lack of originality. :p (Though I suppose impressed at my memory?? How'd that thing STICK in there after one mention in some 4,000 pages??)

I love how Emma's plea for help turned into a very interesting discussion about where we come up with names LOL

who doesn't love Triad? :)

We love you too Emma, and will do our very best to help your poor busy timelining fingers! :computer:

As for my names, I just make them up.   I like odd combinations of vowels and consonants (read: Hasaarth and Aerrath) and stuff that sounds olde... or just out of this world!  And I love a Y ! its like my favorite letter.  (Lillyth, Jaydarin, R'yin ,upcoming brownrider T'brynn..dysali, daynar.. oh nooooooo! THey ALL have Ys! Im predictable!).  And I rob from people who are smarter than me.  If I read a beautiful name somewhere, I'll change it up a little and use that..  !  I LOVE making up names.  If anyone ever wants help making up names, ask me!

I write pages (by hand and pen even, not by computer) of spellings and words until I find one I "Like" the "look" of :)

Does anyone else do THAT? LOL Patrick and I should mix our pages together and see what we get!   You should have seen my pages to come up with Hasaarth and also the ONPC, D'trian and Mistaith.

FUn!  I love names :)

Yeah, I've done that, take a sound I like and incorporate it into a name.

I am fond of double vowel (except 'e' and 'o', I mena they've been done to death), and hard guttural stops.

I bet I have more y's and n's than is normal. :p I love y and n!

I get my names a variety of ways. Sometimes I look around a room and start mixing sounds or chopping up words I see, like Eimi. Sometimes I see something cool somewhere that I fiddle with for a while until I like the look/sound of it. Like Clancey, I also write pages of names until I come up with the perfect one -F'melar and his family being a case in point. Sometimes they come to me, and sometimes when I'm bored I will start fiddling with words or names of people and writing down variations. I have whole notebooks of these that I refer to when I need a name! Tatitem was one of these. More than one name has been produced by spelling mistakes while writing papers or passing roadsigns at high speed and only glancing at the words so that they slurr together.

And when I get really stuck, I find a word find and start stringing together the randomly assigned letters until I find something I like. Sort of like Patrick's calculator I guess!
