I thought you were male initially because Clancey sounded like a male name to me and all the telling myself that you're female is having not the slightest effect.
When I crossed the US and Canada and met all my friends from my old club I found each real person disconcerting. They said all the same things as they would in the daily chats we'd been having for two or three years, but my mental picture of them was a screen name followed by their distinctive font and font colour inside an AIM window.
On the positive side, my earliest fandom friend (from 1999) is amused to think that she remains tall, slim, and blonde in my mind, regardless of the reality.
I think the brain (my brain?) just has to have a few reference points and (luckily) with on-line interactions it doesn't really matter if they're completely wrong!

I was in the same boat as you Jane.
In 1986-7 I belonged to the Scf-Fi forum on CompuServe, and chatted with many folk. Annually we would gather in Boston for a Sci-Fi convention and get to meet.
One person I chatted with almost daily was named "The Speaker", and I had developed this mental picture of a tall slender guy, hooked nose, frizzy hair.
When I met HER, she was short and pudgy, with long straight hair.
Of course, at the same convention, my roommate and I failed to exchange real names and spend two hours leaning against the opposite sides of a column awaiting the other.

I definately didn't mean weird in the bad sense. I love that Triad has a lot of people of various ages! It just seems like the standard in so many clubs is a lot of very young members... which is perhaps why a lot of annoying drama seems to go on in other clubs! :bounce:
