Gee, Emma, you're missing the point.  Beating the AUSSIES is good, beating the KIWIS is bad.

Nope, Beating the AUSSIES is good, beating the KIWIS is better, beating BOTH is brilliant.

Cricket is the game with the flat bat, right?

I've tried and tried to understand that game, but I am convinced it is some thing England invented to confuse Americans, and the rest of the world is in on it.

Wasn't there an explanation about how it *really* originated in Douglas Adams' Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy series?

So, is it the one with the flat bat?

Mikel, I do believe that we Americans need to reinvent this game and bring it to Pern! We can have a heated game of.... Wicket every restday at the tavern. Holders vs. crafters, or holdfolk vs. weyrfolk, or some such pairing.

That strikes me as a great idea.

We should have a brain storming session  :toothy2:  some evening to hammer outthe details

Yes, Amanda, its the one with the flat bat.  That goes on for days and days without end............... and then they switch sides.................... and keep playing.............................

I'll stick to good old American Baseball  :usa2:

Eimi is my favorite! :applaus:

And I like baseball too, but only if I can watch it live so I can heckle and cheer and yell and so on.

Ohhh!  I'm in for this.  Especially if my team beats Emma's team, or Dracie's.  Or both.

Oh, well, I'm from Seattle.  We don't heckle.  Unless you're Alex Rodriguez and then we just boo every time you're at bat or make a play.

I think besides Terrel Owens, he's the most unwelcome man in Seattle  :cussing:   But usually we've very polite fans  :angel7:

You'd be no good with cricket ... unless you can heckle and cheer in slow-motion over five days!

The difference is that Terrell Owens is unwelcome everywhere.

People at sporting events drink alcoholic beverages.

In Mass Quantities

In cricket (and probably in the Tavern's games of Wicket) the thirst is caused by ... dare I say it ... boredom.  It is a *very* slow game!

Why would anyone watch such a boring game? Down with Wicket!

We can make Wicket more Baseball-like.

Baseball has three levels.
1 - Tedium, with burst of indecipherable action
2 - Slow, with burst of excitement
3 - Keeping track of who is doing what, where.

I've been a life long fan of baseball, and if I am at a game there is always something going on.  Is that runner going to steal?  Are the fielders in the proper position....

...uhm, I am a one-sport geek, sorry.

But between boredom and yelling, there is always a reason to drink.

People drink a lot at Wicket!  On a sunny day, waiting for something to happen - there's plenty of drinking time!  In fact, most people are busy drinking when something does actually happen and with no replay screens on Pern there's going to be a lot of asking their neighbour in the crowd what just happened!

I think Wicket's best for Pern because it's so foreign to most of you.

(And the Ausies, Pommies, and Kiwis will have an advantage!)

English / British person.  In New Zealand often used in conjunction with b*stard ('Pommie b*stard'), as a term of ... endearment.

Wait I know this one... 'whinging' is brit-speak for 'whining' right? Like, kids do when they want candy and mom tells them to eat their vegetables, right?
