Triad Forum

There are lots of returnees to Triad and a lot of people around who have long histories in Pern Fandom.  I know from his LJ that AJ has just done the big count up of former clubs, but what about the rest of us?  How many clubs have you belonged to?

I met fandom with High Reaches but the relationship was brief.  I found the round robin format difficult to deal with in a non-US time zone.

After that it was Ridges of Pern which I regard as my 'real' first club.  I met some of you there.

I briefly stuck my head in the door at Dragonriders of Pern but they were in the middle of a rape plot and I'm a wimp so we parted company almost instantly.

Then Star Lake Weyr, Dragonsfall Weyr, and Pern Shadows.

After that it was Anchor's Fall Weyr with a brief side serving of Golden Gate Weyr.

Recently I was lurking in four or five clubs before I discovered Triad Weyrs.  Especially with the influx of new and returning members I can't imagine I'll be needing another club for a long, long time.

1999 - 2007; I'll call it 7 clubs, leaving out the very short memberships.

In 1995 & 1996 I was a member of DR. In the FAR distant past, when we still posted by copying everyone's e-mail addresses into the "To" field. ;) In 1996 I went to live in Austria for a year with almost no internet access, though, so that was the end of that.

I didn't rejoin anything until 2001 when I joined Pern Shadows, and eventually Dragonsfall. Since then I've pretty much been bouncing back and forth around here. ;) In and out and all about, but no where else has ever felt like home like it does here!

I had started with Dragonriders of Pern but left for some reason (I've slept since then, as we say here at work).

'round about late 2000 I joined Dragonfall, then Triad when it originally opened.  Maybe Pern Shadows as well.

Ok. Back on topic. The only other club I was ever a member of was Dreams End.

I've done a fair bit in my time! Under multiple names, however, as a.) I don't like my real first name and b.) my mother prohibits me from using my real first name online (so I use my middle, mwa.)

Summer 2003: Dream's End Weyr
I really really really liked DE. Unfortunately, I felt like I wasn't a good enough writer for there and was intimidated by the quality of everybody else and the lack of quality of me (or so I thought at the time- I wish I had those old posts and my old first persona to see what I was like!), so I became a lurker and stayed a lurker till the club shut down.

The reason I'm here at Triad now is because I really missed DE and wanted to get back into it now that I was a more seasoned rider, but of course it was shut down, so I figured Triad would become my friend. I still miss DE sometimes though, when Triad seems just a tad bit big at times. (In terms of all the places and all the plots, even though big is awesome!)


Under an alias:

Fall 2003: Dawn Meadows Weyrhold
Dawn Meadows was my second club. Full post, like DE, but a smaller club with only a few routinely active writers. Also the post quality was not stellar. I'm not saying it was BAD. There were some amazing plots there, including the weyrlings-lost-between-on-an-island-and-have-to-find-their-way-back (which I'm proud to have been involved in 'cause damn that was fun) and the time when the weyr flooded from a hurricane. My writing wasn't totally perfect then, either, although it started to improve. I mean, I was writing both halves of a romantic relationship myself! That was a lot of fun, actually, and you can get good writing out of it just like with a novel, but somehow it seems a bit silly in a coposting club to write it all yourself, right?

On the other hand, there was jealousy and politics, which imploded the club. See, Dawn Meadows and Dusk Forest were two sister clubs who eventually merged. The two BoDs became one and started power-playing. I was elected to fill the vacant spot. Imagine that: 2 DFers, 2 DMers, and the random person who's like "wait wtf is going on" and caught in the middle. yeah that sucked. But I loved the club LOTS and was sad when it went down thanks to the fighting. This was also my first club with premade dragonets for you, which I LOVED.

Spring 2004: Fallen Stars of Pern
FSoP was an awesome club, and the place where my writing went from adequate to much much better (imho). I had some amazing plotlines there and amazing characters, one of which I've napped over to here and REALLY need to do more with. I had a few good friends there and one exeptional writing partner who I miss lots. I know it's silly to leave a club when your writing partner goes away, but even though I had 4 personas, my best and most fun and developed was K'ran, and when Jade went away everything, all those plots, all that fun, just fell through and then it wasn't as fun anymore. I lurked for awhile before finally leaving (though I'm a wee bit miffed they kept and changed my bronzer to a brown, but I guess 'cause of the storylines by then they couldn't just erase him.) FSoP was awesome, but my time there had really run its course. This was also my first experience with creating a new location for a club. ^^ I came up with the idea of a convalescence/retirement place in a warm location for SEVERELY injured dragons and riders (served as a Healer and Dragonhealer training hall as well), and that went over well, so I was happy.

My first ever round robin club. I love Cibby because it's big, it's active, and it has a hell of a lot of fun plots. (Blowing up Igen Weyr? Dragon plague? Twisters show up during Fall and throw around a bunch of riders and dragons?) I still maintain a membership here, mostly 'cause I've always wanted a female bluerider thanks to my Dawn Meadows days (and never got one BECAUSE of the damn BoD powerplaying *cough*) and Cibby finally allowed me one. ^_^

AJ, am I missing any?

Well, I first really got into writing/role-playing my Freshman year of high school when the first Lord of the Rings movie came out.  (It seemed like another lifetime ago!)  Me and some friends got together and started writing our own stories in Tolkien's world.  We also dabbled a bit in Pern, but LotR took over our lives for about three years.  

My first role-playing club was called World's Apart.  It had a LotR section, a Matrix section, and a LotR+Matrix section.  I never went into those threads.  It was scary in there  :D  But I had a lot of fun in the LotR part, playing in alternate universes and writing about things that happened to certain characters BEFORE the War of the Ring...  Yeah, I'm a nerd  X)  But it didn't last, what with the hype of LotR going _way_ down and all, so I began searching for a new place to write--a place where I could expand my skills and imagination.

That's when I joined Triad.  My Senior year of high school.  I've learned so much over the past years, and am still learning and enjoying every moment of it!

First Pern club (sometime in 2003): Seventh Pass Weyrs
I joined them mostly because I was young and they had semi decent names and lenient persona rules.  I made a bronzerider and posted once before I lost interest.  I'm kind of glad to find that he is still a bronzerider though they changed his name and killed off one of his flits.  I didn't like the club because of its "one metallic" rule, you could either only have a metallic dragon or a metallic flit, not both.

Second Club (summer of 2005): Fithos Weyr
I liked this one again for its not so weird name and the close knit society.  I never even got to make a persona before the website died.  I only saw one Gold flight written out and the start of the return of Thread.  I thought it would have been interesting to RP the return of Thread but never got the chance.

And in the Spring of '06 I was accepted into the Triadian society and will be staying for quite some time.

I have only ever been at Triad.  I never wrote elsewhere or really even looked elsewhere.  I did my window shopping and found the one I wanted and have been here ever since :D

The only reason I knew about Pern Fandom was because my older brother (BEFORE internet, if you could believe that!) was in a Weyr that met in RL and he started a BBC thread for the club.  Before I moved to Japan I was thinking I needed a way to keep up with my English since I knew a lot exchange students who had lost their extensive vocabulary in their native language from lack of use.  I remembered what my brother had done and how I loved reading the "issues" of stories he'd bring home with him and I thought "Heck, if he made one on a bulletin board before internet, there's GOTTA be a Weyr online now" and... well... that was that :D

I was talking to AJ about this the other day.  I now nearly always write the weyrmate for any of my characters because each time I moved clubs (and took my characterrs with me) they lost weyrmates.  To somebody who hates to make her characters unhappy, continually killing off their weyrmates was pretty traumatic.  Nowadays I protect them and me by making their weyrmate an NPC that I write for.

I've got a few riders with broken hearts, although they usually got them for a different reason: my boys seemed to end up on the losing side of love triangles -- and most of the times, I didn't find out that tidbit of information until everyone else on the list did.    And still, 9 times out of 10, I'd rather write a relationship with someone else than do it myself with NPCs.

I don't think I'm capable of writing happy relationships, and the character's partners very rarely have anything to do with it. :(

Yes, it was awful.  I was terribly disappointed in it at the time and it probably contibuted a lot to my disinclination to see movies of books I've loved.

Sea Breeze Weyr, for ever ago - Then Dragonsfall and Pern Shadows -> Triad weyrs. When Dream's End was opened I was there too.  :cyclopsani:
I also tried some round-robin Pbem but didn't like it. Can't remember the name.
I've pretty much stuck to Triad since it's beginning. except the time I took off to have a baby. (And that baby is now almost three years old!)

Personally, I didn't get into Pern Fandom until a good friend of mine (since departed, and greatly missed) nagged me/cajoled me into joining, luring me on with the promise of good writing and solid plots.

I started out when I was 14 or so in a group called 'Mage Wars' which was an offshoot of the Mercedes Lackey mailing list. It imploded when the oldbies wouldn't let us write with them, but then got mad when the new crop of writers said 'screw you!' (metaphorically speaking) and had their characters go off and have their own adventures.

From there, I joined several Anita Blake based mailing lists, which were a hell of a lot of fun and contained some of the best years of my short writing life (thus far). I helped co-mod some of those, and then went on to create a few of my own PbEMs (the late 'Circle of Stone' and 'Nevaron' lists, most notably - both with friends). I also did one on my lonesome whose name I can't remember, that was about the 'Kerian Empire'. And I had a stint in the group 'Imperial Secrets' where I introduced my beloved Tessra Alvey. That was a gooder. :)

So yeah. Pern's new for me, sort of. To be honest I'm not the biggest Pern fan, but the writing (and the people I know) makes me stay.

You know how I first got into Pern fandom? It was years ago when I was tooling around fanfiction.net, looking for fanfics on the Pern books cause I loved reading them and thought surely someone had written some fanfics. But no, in fact, at the time, Anne McCaffery's books were banned subject matter on fanfiction.net. I was so disappointed. But I figured someone somewhere had to have some stories... so I did a google search and found the PBEM world and Triad.

I discovered fandom by accident. After finding and reading my first Pern book -- Dragonsdawn -- I searched online for others by Anne and accidently discovered fandom clubs -- I never suspected such a thing existed, nor that Pern was so well known. I joined my first club and was writing there before reading my second book.

The only problem I had doing things that way was that I actually liked the stuff written in the club better than some of the books!

I'm with Eimi. I never did any other clubs before Triad, and never really considered writing as a social activity before I found it. I was trying to find information on the history and usage of the word "weyr" to clarify a point in a story I was writing (and incidentally, avoiding writing a paper for my grad class), when a google search brought up a small link on the side of the screen advertising a Pern Club -I forgot which one. Curious, I took a look around, found a list of links to other clubs, started poking around those, and found Triad. By this point the idea was beginning to grow on me, and within about two hours of that initial search I was a lurker. Asked a few questions, upgraded to member, never really looked back.

:alien: I will not admit to what clubs I was in before Triad... mostly because one particularly aweful fandom experiance (and I'd venture to guess that quite a few people have horror stories from fandom) made me swear never to join fandom again!

So, obviously because I am here, my strike against all fandom clubs did not last.   :cheers: I did stop using my real name though. Actually, a few of you listed clubs that I have been in at the same time as I was there too... hopefully you can't guess who I really am! And if you can, I would very much appreciate it if it not be posted anywhere!

Anwen, I have no idea who you might have been IF we ever were in a club together, and I'm immensely curious- were you and I ever concurrently in a club prior to Triad? You don't have to answer if you wanna keep anomynity, I'm just curious :)

Also, Bad Fandom Experiences suck. We should all share them :D My only BFE was the Dawn Meadows thing which sucked 'cause I liked the club. Makes me glad there's nothing like that here!

As I am sure certain of you will agree, there are certain bad famdom experiences that are best left in the past. :lepra:

The bad things of the past are in the past. We should just take the good things and the lessons learned and move forward. Life is too short to harp on those BFEs. ( <-- a lesson learned the hard way)

AJ is right... we are going to be leaving the bad stuff behind us. And while I would not usually request for people to censor what they say, in this case I'm going to ask for everyone to not go into details, please. Even about things that happened in other clubs.

Let's watch what we say, folks. :) Hurt feelings fester, and you never know who's going to read something and feel bad.

If I start to be worried that people are going to get their feelings hurt, I will lock this thread like the big mean bully I am. ;)

Triad is my only club, and I don't feel the need for any others. (except maybe a teeny tiny little one ;) ) I'm actually not a huge fan of the books, but I started reading them in jr high and loved them then. I was feeling nostalgia for Pern and started looking for rpgs that might be good. I found Triad, and I love the writing and the writers and the characters so much I'm still here after over two and half years.  :love5:

Obvisouly we have not been too successful in corrupting Becki or Anwen or Rochelle yet!  They still only have a few personas!  Its my new years resolution to make sure you both have twice as many personas by this time next year.  You are too good of writers and too much fun to post with not to!

I've only been involved with Triad.  I was a heavy hitter on the anne mccaffrey board and saw people talking about the PBeM and MOOs and MUSHs.  I did some investigating and saw that Triad had a great set up with lots of active people and I thought I'd give it a go  :albino:

Aww, thanks Eimi!  :love2: But I think you'll be lucky if I have one or two more sonas. It takes a lot of energy for me to come up with personality and history and such.

When you lurk you don't have that problem.

Bree has to keep a better handle on her personas.  All of mine have very tight leashes so that I can keep them reeled in until I deem they should be released.  But then there's the time when the persona gets stronger then me and they break out, like Kouna.  She was a surprise, but I love her.

I missed this Thread while I was on LOA in Kentucky!!  But before Triad, I was in Lakesedge and Arolos.   I adored Lakesedge and was good friends with the BOD of the time I was there... which was multiple years ago.  i was still in college!   Oh woe is me! I left Pern fandom for many moons, but then got lonely for dragons.  So I tried Arolos on my return to Fandom, but find I am not such a fan of round - Robin posting!

I came to Triad not sure what I'd find and fell in love with the place and the people and the writers :)  I'm never leaving!   The writing here is fantastic.  Everyone deserves kudos for that!   :cheers:

Aww thanks Clancey!  And I thought about Arolos too, but didn't like the Round Robin style either.  Not our style I guess.

That's all right, the Arolos BoD and the Triad Council are planning on dividing the world up into Round Robin and Full Post... and then FIGHTING IT OUT TO THE DEATH!

Or maybe just having cake. I'm never really sure which from one week to the next. ;) Depends on if the Arolos girls have good cake this week!

Last night I was IMed by an Arolos member who thought that I was The Arolos Vicky. Perhaps having me in place in this club is a prerequisite for the world domination plan.

I admit, life is every so much easier when we can say "Your Vickie!" and "Our Vickie!"

Wow, am I the only one with a list to rival AJ's?

I've done quite a bit of lurking and so on... Plus went through quite a few BFE's, including one here at Triad, but that was many, many moons ago, under a totally different group of Admins. Trust me folks, appreciate having great admins, because they will make or break a game! (:love4: Bree... and probably the rest of you folks too, but I don't know you all yet!)

I have a special relationship with the Arolos/Dark Fort BoD - no matter what, I am not surrendering my appendix or any other body parts (ask Bree!)

Dark Fort certainly allows both types of posting.  Sometimes round robin can be fun, if it works right, other times it can go off at wierd tangents.,, It all depends on the people plotting and how they think.

I made friends with Laura of Arolos many years ago (I don't remember how now, probably Pern Alliance related! *G*). Most of the BoD of Arolos that I know I've met through her! We have great adventures involving attempting to order cakes for delivery across the Atlantic Ocean. :D

And yes, the real battle between Arolos and Triad has nothing to do with the world... we're fighting over who gets to harvest Emma's organs for the good of the club. She has to sleep with one eye open, that poor girl...

I'm in Cibryen Weyr, which is the only round-robin that I've tried that's kept me for more than two weeks. Partly because I love the canon (come on, they blew up Igen Weyr. that's awesome.), partly 'cause I like being a little bit looser sometimes in my canon than here (since I do like female blueriders), partly because the people are awesome. Cibby's not small, maybe 20 active people and anywhere from 0 to 40 posts a day- it can get busyyyyy. *sob* And the hardest storyline I've ever had to write I'm currently writing there.

Honestly, I think it's not as hard to adapt as you think. I find that using Gmail helps because USUALLY the RR threads get chunked into one Gmail convo which makes your life so much easier. When I tried a Yahoo account I got lost but Gmail can really help you comprehend round-robin.

I'm NOT touching Dark Fort or Arolos, though. Too big. *sob*

I think the control freak in me would find that ... difficult.  I like being able to stop. discuss, and change the direction of a copost, or abandon it if it's not working.  Round-robin always seemed like publishing before I'd even finished thinking about it!

My point exactly Jane.  I'm in ONE Round Robin style group and its okay, but my posts are ungodly short because I can't think that fast on my feet.  Then of course you get the time when someone can't post and EVERYTHING stops short.

Starting a thread = 5
Each post in a thread = 2
Replies to threads you started = 1

The marks earned here are recorded separately from the marks on the main web pages (those earned by posting, craft articles, welcomer salary, etc), but when you need to spend marks the webbies manually transfer as many as you need from the forum onto the main pages.

The majority of people writing Pern are female (there was an article about it somewhere) so the chances of Clancey being a girl were high.  Also, the spelling "Clancy" is more common for males.  As in one of the actresses sons (Cate Blanchett? or Rachel Griffiths?? - one of them), and also Clancy of the Overflow....

You guys just keep discussing things in this marvellous thread I started.  :cheers:  I don't even have to be involved to be raking in the marks.

In fact, yesterday I was telling Bree I had 12 marks to go to my purchase of 'Forever Reqs Free L4 Hold/Hall' and now I'm 48 marks on my way to the next purchase goal.

Of course, that was when I realised I don't have a next  purchase goal.  Yeah, now I'm just gathering them up for the fun of it!
