Title: Travel Time request
Post by: Mikel on December 27, 2006, 07:50:14 AM
OK, how long would a sea voyage from Topaz Sea Hold to Vintner Hall take?

I'll take a punt at it to provide a starting point for discussion.

From the Triad web pages:

QuoteFrom Dragonsfall Weyr to Dolphin Cove Weyr - 5,000 miles (8,045 kilometres)

This looks about right to me give or take not enough miles to matter in something as heavy on the guess work as this will be.  Yes, Dragonsfall is 600 miles further south than Amber Hills Hold, and Dolphin Cove Weyr is 500 miles further east than Topaz Sea Hold, but that's good enough for me.  This distance is probably 'as the crow flies' anyway.  Adjust to suit yourself.

The Atlas of Pern (quoting from The White Dragon) gives the sea journey from Cove to Southern Hold as taking 9 days.  This is about two-thirds your distance (using my calibrated eye and the Atlas) and seems ridiculous when compared to the Triad's quoted distances.  I'm abandoning this 'fact' right now.

From a Wiki article on clipper speeds:

Quote... clippers aimed at 9 knots (17 km/h) or better. Sometimes these ships could reach 20 knots (37 km/h)

10mph x 24 = 240 miles per day

5000 miles / 240 miles per day = 21 days

Which sounds fast, fast, fast to me.  Perhaps they were racing clippers or perhaps my conversion from knots to mph was flawed.  This 'fact' might have to sit out the next round too.

A couple of local web references from New Zealand's pioneer past:

QuoteThe NZ Company ship 'London' sailed with 200 immigrants aboard from Gravesend, England, on the 10th August and arrived on the 12th December, 1840, a voyage of 121 days.

12000 miles / 121 days =  100 miles per day

Those early ships were slower.  I know they got faster as time went on.

QuoteThomas Reid of Dunedin came to New Zealand as an immigrant settler from Scotland in the year 1862 aboard the fast clipper ship ROBERT HENDERSON, making the journey, port to port, in 85 days.

12000 miles / 85 days =  140 miles per day

For no apparent reason other than this was a clipper and it's the middle figure I've come up with, I like this one best.

So, applying this rate of travel to the multi-assumptioned choice of 5000 miles:

5000 miles / 140 miles per day = 35 days

You might be slower down that seaway between the ocean and the Sea of Azov, but the whole calculation is teetering on so many assumptions I don't think I'm going to even look at that.

(Here is your grain of salt.  You'll need it.)

OO, where do you go to get your eye calibrated?

How often are you required to get it re-calibrated?

Do you have a certificate, or a little check mark on your eye?

WOW!  When you seize hold of a question, you shake it for all its worth, don't you?  :D   Thanks.

Now all I need is a boat to sail on and and some one to co-post with on the journey.

We'll pick him up at Coral Bay Hold. I'm sure an NPC will take him the first leg of the journey. ;)

Well, there is the trip from Topaz Sea Hold to Coral Sea to fill in.

And then, once I am settled in to to Vintnerhall, of course

You might need NPCs for the end of your journey, too:

QuoteAmber Hills is located in a triangular valley in the southern foothills of the Great Western Barrier range ... A river [flows] from the northwest corner to the southern tip of the triangle, where it then empties into a steep canyon. If one were to navigate the canyon roads, a journey of about a day and a half, they could then take a barge and coach system down along the river to other communities. It eventually empties into the Sea of Azov to the south. From the southern tip of the valley to the sea is a journey of approximately 125-miles.

Not that I would ever turn down a post, but I believe there is a dock at Vintnerhall.

Still, I am sure we could arrange something

Indeed, but I'm not sure your character will be landing on it.  :)

QuoteThe river also can be utilized for moving goods within the valley by livestock driven barges. However, because of a dam in the canyon, the barges cannot be used for transportation down river of the Hold.

I imagine that if arriving from the Sea of Azov, a character would be coming up-river by barge and then by c-o-a-c-h.  I hope those things have good springs!

Enjoy.

Well, let's not forget that the Vintner Hall is not located AT Amber Hills... just nearby. ;) I'll chat with Eimi and clarify the details of the differences, however. :)

Nearby.  Yes.

QuoteThe new Vintner Hall is located a short walk from Amber Hills Hold, nestled up against the river.

Jane, quoting stuff to me that I wrote myself might make me a bit testy. :p
