Title: One Question...
Post by: PastMember on June 20, 2005, 12:00:15 PM
I noticed that you said that only heterosexual females Impress dragons here. So is it impossible for a bisexual or homosexual female to Impress a dragon?

If a bisexual or lesbian woman were to Impress a dragon (which would require council approval) it would be a green or gold dragon, as we do not allow female blueriders or brownriders.

You'd have to talk pretty fast to convince us of it, I have a feeling. There are plenty of clubs where women of various sexual preferences can Impress various colors... we tend to be very traditional, and I don't see that changing any time soon.

I think it'd be interesting to see- bisexual or homosexual females exist, just like the males do, and I see nothing wrong with them impressing a green, heh. Sure, they couldn't have random flight relationships with the same gender, but why not allow same gender romances or weyrmatings? If they did impress greens or golds it'd seem fine by me- the club would still be traditional with females on only those colors while allowing for the possibility that bi- and homosexual females exist and can Impress.

It's not a question that had come up before due to our strict adherence to Anne McCaffrey's rules on clubs. ;) However, the rules have been relaxed recently... though for the most part we chose to stick with the rules we'd been following all this time.

I can clarify the situation with the Council and get back to you both on it. :D

Did anyone ever come up with an answer for this? I still stand by my position above and think it would be an interesting thing to see, just because it makes sense to me and if they stayed on green/gold there should technically be no breaking of Triad's strict canon- it's not like suddenly female blueriders start appearing.

I think we agreed NOT to discuss it simply because we do stick to AM's canon so strictly. So, if she didn't write about a bisexual greenrider or goldrider, then we don't/won't either.

I'll check with a few Council members, although our mantra has always been, 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it.'

There are a LOT of clubs out there--and I'm sure more than one of them is extremely willing to muck about with what AM's written w/o Triad having to loosen its strict adherance to the world she's created.

The canon is not so much who CAN ride dragons as who the dragons picked. I don't think that anyone cares about the sexual orientation of those who stand... the dragons know who to pick, and they'll pick who is right for them.

Anne McCaffrey's original rules stated who each dragon color would pick. You can have lesbian and bisexual female candidates until the cows come home, but the dragons aren't going to pick them because that's just the way they work.

Since the rules were relaxed lots of clubs have taken advantage of this to explore the possibilities, but I simply don't see any reason for us to change at this late a date the criteria that the dragons use to pick their partners. :)

Okay, what about lesbian or bisexual lower caverns workers and holders. I figured they'd be okay right? I've been thinking about creating just such a persona for a long time now and it'd be good to know what the council thinks about it.

No problem with that! The only thing to keep in mind is that in the south, outside of a Weyr, women are pretty much seen useful only for their ability to have lots of babies--a woman who isn't interested in doing that for whatever reason will be looked down upon for the most part. She certainly wouldn't make a big deal about it.
