I was wondering about Pern birthingday traditions. Do people still do candles and cakes and singing? I can't remember ever hearing anything about what happens then... :tumble:
To be perfectly honest, I don't even recall mention of a birthingday celebration in an AM book! *g* I think the whole 'celebration' part might be a fandom invention...and I'm not sure if they'd do the conventional things such as cake and candles....I'm thinking maybe not, although I may be mistaken.

I don't think they really do anything on B-days on Pern. It wouldn't be unheard of. In our civilizations, for a very long time people only celebrated their ruler's birth day, everyone else just had other, more important things to do. And with the kind of civilization that exists on Pern, they probably don't do any parties, or cake or gifts although close friends and relatives might acknowledge it by maybe cooking something the person loves for dinner or bring them a little gift... but possibly they just let it pass by but keep in mind that the person is a year older.
Which leaves it open for people to do whatever they want I guess :) If you want a party, I suppose you could have one.
Which is why I indicated that they would probably *not* celebrate in conventional ways. We've written parties, which is fine...but I doubt they'd do much more than that--other than maybe exchange small gifts.
