Title: Names of Constellations?
Post by: Roxanne on July 15, 2004, 07:49:30 PM
Anybody have any idea where the star names that would be seen from DFW could be found?

I've searched for constellations in the various starcraft sites, but haven't really found anything.

I'll keep looking, but help would be appreciated.

I've had this before - the only thing I've been able to find is the names of the moons from the Atlas of Pern, which are Belior and Timor if that's any help.

At some point I know I've seen a picture of the actual Star Anne based it on... maybe on her website?

If we could find that, maybe we could figure out what constallations might be visable. :D

Consider the fact that AIVAS would have had that information...

But, with the long span of time from Founding until the rediscovery of AIVAS, the Pernese would probably have renamed the constellations to suit themselves.

With the awakening of AIVAS, the original names would become known, at least to some, but, people being people, most would continue to use the Pern names.

Conclusion: We can probably use whatever names we want!

Here's a picture of Rukbat, and how to find it in the night sky:

http://www.srellim.org/pern/rukbat.htm (http://www.srellim.org/pern/rukbat.htm)

This page has some star maps of the sky as seen from Pern:

http://www.igd.fhg.de/~wkresse/pern/ (http://www.igd.fhg.de/~wkresse/pern/)

For constellation names, I think those clubs that have a very active Star Craft usually make up their own and there isn't an "official" list.

Hope that helps!

Also any constellation from Earth's skies would look different in viewing from Pern's surface.  They're 3D in space, so looking at them from a different direction would produce a different constellation.

Isn't there a section in Renegades or All the Weyrs where Jaxom and F'lessan and Mirrim are discussing star charts?  I thought they mentioned some constellations.  :puzzled:

I know in Skies, they did mention SOME star names, as that one really fleshed out the concept of star mapping and astro navigation, but ATM I can't recall exactly where. If needed, I can skim through some of the later parts. Let me know.
