Title: Neglected Craft
Post by: PastMember on September 25, 2003, 01:46:31 PM
Hello.

I'm a lurker, not a writer. I consider myself an Archivist.

My question: How about the overlooked Craft on Pern:  the Miller?

After all if the Bakers all had to flail the grain to get seeds, grind into flour to make dough, how scarce (and expensive) would those bubbly pies be?

Grumpy old man, George.

I would hate to think of Pern without bubbly pies.

Actually, you made me look, and believe it or not (and why would you doubt me *shut up Heather, Lexy!*), there are a couple if references to millers in the Triad database.

+Axina's (Paula) father is listed as a Miller.

+The job is also listed as a direct-report to the Topaz Steward.

However, I did not find any active millers around.

And I erally like my bubblies

Hey there, George!  Good to see you speaking up again!  I am working on getting that stuff on the website, just haven't had a chance to yet.  :)

As for crafts that seem to be missing, I think they are around, they just aren't necessarily spoken of.  I mean, many jobs have to be there or they wouldn't have so many of the things they do have.  Especially after AIVAS discovery.  In the Triad timeline they may not have remembered all of those things, but it still had a tremendous impact on their lives.  (i.e. many Holds have electricity and they are living at the level of many of those in the 1800's.)

So, as Mikel stated, we do have a few NPC personas who are Millers, we just have no active PC personas who are.  :)

OK, glad to hear it. Haven't run across them yet in my browsing of Triad. Just knew there is no mention of them in any of the Pern books, as near as I can remember.

See what I can do about stirring up more discussion on other subjects.

George

I have a great idea George. Why not become a member instead of just a lurker and make a miller persona? :halo:

I am glaad we have lurkers though makes me feel special to know people other than members are reading the fruits of my labor?

Tina,

Don't think I'd care for the life of a Miller...

However, after 50 years in the printing game, I have been thinking of jumping into the mix at the Printer Hall.

We would love to see you create a Printer Hall persona and explore that area a bit more.  Since our last writer for the Hallmaster left due to real life, it's been slim pickin's over there lately!  But, I do know there are a couple writers with personas still in that area.  :)
