what sort of trees are there on pern? i'm asking from the point of view of what wood would be available for making wine barrels
Peeking at the DLG..
Sky-broom: dense & hard. Difficult to work with, used as supports for buildings, etc.
Oak forests were started at some point.
Pine, deal, and spongewood are the others mentioned (no real info on these.)
Hope that helps!

Any _logical_, hardy species probably would have been imported, and local species may have been "renamed" to mimic one resembling an Earth species left behind.
Oak, Pine, Ash, Rowan, Scrub Pine, Willow and Cherry
Also, from DLG
As far as wine barrels, I've most often heard of oak being used, at least here on earth. Many yummy wines have a cherry flavor, but that's from the fruit, not from the wood I think. Also, just wondering if you had seen this site? http://www.barrelbuilders.com (http://www.barrelbuilders.com)

Would trees be planted around or in a hold/hall/Weyr during a Pass?
Well, ACH has orchards, forest passes and of course the vineyards, not to mention lumberyards as they've got both Vintner Hall and Woodcraft Hall...as long as they were well covered during Threadfall and grounds crews were good with avoiding burrows, I don't see why they shouldn't exist as long as they were set back from the main Hold...
What we have to remember is that we're coming off a loooong Interval and no one thought Thread would return so yeah, I'd say there were probably lots of trees planted around and near Holds in some cases...they're not going to destroy trees that are hundred turns old by now because Thread's back--they're going (perhaps greedily so) try to keep them as safe as possible and our dragonriders get to work their little butts off doing just that! :)

i was asking because I was doing a bit of research for my cooper, and it seems that oak is a common choice for making wine, cider and beer barrels.
