She aged out of being a candidate a couple of turns ago, so they probably never were in classes together. Your guy is new to the Weyr, right?

I must have not read closely enough on her sheet! But regarding knowing her, he could know her from the hold. They would likely only be acquaintances as they're not from the same hold, just the same territory, but he could have met her while delivering something to the main hold or the like.
Alternatively, we could just have her meet someone for the first time!
She and Arrilon would have aged out of being Candidates around the same time, so they could talk about that.
