"Are you going some where, My Lady? I hope you're not thinking of going out
without an escort," Zandan asked, watching the Lady Holder with unreadable
expression. She was dressed for out doors.
Zandan had never really cared about any of Corowal's wives or other women
in his life. That didn't prevent him doing his duty, keeping them safe. At
least, with Felyna, Zandan could understand why Corowal had married her. He
had never figure out what Corowal had seen in Ofelia, except her belonging
to Coral Bay's Blood. Corowal's children were different matter though, he
was fiercely protective towards them and loved when they called him uncle
Zandan.
She pulled her cloak tighter around her slim body, startled by his voice.
She had forgotten Zandan.
It didn't last long though and turns of training took over.
"I was, actually. Do you really think I need an escort to walk to the
stables, Zandan? My favorite runner had a foal a couple of sevendays ago,
and I wanted to see her." Xebex chirruped lightly from her shoulder, his
blue hide barely visible against the blue of her cloak. And get away from
my husband, she didn't say aloud. Since she had been home, it had been
nearly impossible to maintain her distance from him. In fact, she had
been feeling like she wanted to cling even tighter to him after seeing what
Benani and Zathris were going through. Another poor side effect of the bad
choice she made when she fell in love with Corowal, against her mother's
better judgement.
"And I do have _somewhat_ of an escort. " She slipped her arm free of her
cloak and the blue flit twined himself around her arm, his eyes whirling in
a hint of warning at Zandan.
But the blonde lady holder smiled warmly at him anyway, and went on to say,
"You are kind to care for me, though, Zandan. I appreciate it." And she
meant it. Felyna's great skill was getting along well with just about
anyone, even anyones who did not care for her in particular.
"A firelizard isn't an escort," Zanda snorted. He saw firelizards as useful
pets, nothing else. "I am keeping you safe for Corowal. He would be
devasted if something happened to you."
Her delicate snort was as ladylike as it was expressive. "For as well as
you know your cousin, you are quite wrong about him being "devestated" if
something happened to me. I'm sure he'd thank Faranth. " She eyed him
for a moment, as if deciding to trust him or not. "I think Xebex is a
plenty fine escort, but if you wish to accompany me, please feel free. I
don't want to keep you from more important things, though."
"Well, maybe devastated isn't the word. And he's not my cousin. Sarban is
the cousin. I'm just a friend," Zandan replied.
"Devastated is most certainly not the word." She was alarmed that she had
forgotten herself enough to think Zandan was Corowal's cousin. She
certainly hadn't been herself since returning from Amber Hills!
"Quite a good friend, to so care for Corowal's "things"." She meant
herself, of course. She turned back toward her original path. "Coming
then?" She eyed him sideways. She wondered if she dared ask him about
Corowal the younger.
Zandan gave her a half bow and hurried to hold a door open to her. "It's
either that or beating the crap out of him," Zandan murmured with a half
smile "And I already tried that. It was waste of my time and fists."
Felyna laughed aloud and grinned at Zandan. "Oh if only that was an option
for me!" She was slight, even after being pregnant, though, and she
wouldn't even have half as much chance as Zandan. "Was he always so...
" words failed even her skilled tongue and she finally said, for want of a
better word, "... Corowal-ish?." What she really wanted to know, of
course, was had his eyes always strayed, or was there ever a woman who held
his attention all by herself.
"Oh yes. Glib, charming, spoiled rotten and always has the newest toys,"
Zandan replied. There was bitter under tone in his tone.
Felyna smiled and nodded in complete agreement. "He certainly hasn't
changed. Sometimes I feel like his newest toy." Her voice was soft, not
bitter so much as curious. "But I do love him. "
"Don't we all," Zandan replied laconically.
Felyna arched one delicate eyebrow at Zandan. "I imagine." She smiled at
him. "Zandan, is there anything I can do to make you more comfortable
here? We have not spent much time together, but are you happy here? With
us?"
"Find me someone to kill?" Zandan murmured very, very quietly. "Naah, I'm
good," he replied with normal speaking voice. "I'm as happy as I'm ever
going to be," he shrugged a bit. Only place where he could be truly happy
would be Weyr...and he was way too old to become a dragonrider.
Felyna's eyes sparkled at the thought of "someone to kill". "Oddly
enough, I might be able to come up with a name or two for killing." She
smiled to take the complete seriousness out of her statement, but there
were some people that just drove her completely insane. Her gaze
sharpened on him. She knew a little of his violent tendencies and perhaps
wishing a wife on him would not be a good idea, but what about a girl of
like mindedness? "Would you ever want to marry, Zandan?" She asked
casually, eyes traveling up and across his large frame.
Zandan shrugged his wide shoulders. "I've been thinking about it...but I
wouldn't want _me_ to happen to the poor woman. I wouldn't mind having
children though."
"Children requires a wife, Zandan." Her lips curved in a warm smile.
"Perhaps I'll start looking, hmm?"
"Look, I can always borrow Corowal's children. The best part is I can also
hand them back if I get tired of them. You'll be wasting your time if you
try to get me married," Zandan replied.
"I'll take that under advisement, Zandan." She said lightly, her mind
already dancing along the path of match making, her favorite hobby.
Zandan had an omnious feeling he was in for trouble.
