"Bluerider M'van?" T'kala paused to check that Dagreth was asleep. "I'm T'kala, Dagreth is my blue, I was wondering if we could talk?"

"Of course," replied the the older rider with a glance at the Weyrling.
Maybe there was something bothering him about the blue that he needed a dragonhealer's opinion on.

I grew up in the Weyr and I've known dragons all my life but my father a crafter not a dragonrider, I'm the only one oin my family and I was wondering..." T'kala began a little nervous, well very nervous. He could think of what had compelded him to ask a strange rider these questions.

"You were wondering why a blue?" asked M'van gently. It had been a question that he had asked himself at the time.Kiloth's reply simply being that M'van was the one for him, and that it should be enough for them both.

"No so much why, sir, as what does it mean. About me and Dagreth I mean. I went to the candidte classes and everything but I guess it didn't mean anything until two days ago."

"Well, to me it means everything," said M'van. "Kiloth is my life, as I'm sure you realise by now with your little Dagreth. Being a rider at all makes you special, it means that there is something in you that can help defend Pern, which Dagreth saw. Blue, well that makes you stand out. You might not have the chance of a Weyrleadership, but there are other things that you can do just as well with being a bluerider."

"He's the best thing thats ever happened to me." T'kala smile was gentel.
"But what can we do? The blues aren't that strong but they are fast, so are the greens."

"And that's where blues come into their own, they react quickly, able to get the clumps of thread that might be deadly to another colour. And also never forget that a bluerider can be a wingthird, or a searchrider."

Takla's eyes lite up, "A serch rider? ISn't that really rare?"

"It is, but it's a special ability, and those dragons that show it will be encouraged to develop it." M'van studied the lad for a moment, he looked familiar, "Aren't you the Tanner's lad?"

"Yes, sir. My father's a journyman."

"And you've take that up as a craft as well, haven't you?"

"Not long, I just apprenticed a month or so ago. It seemed a good one if I impressed."

"It will be, believe me when it comes to making straps, you'll have an advantage over the others, no matter how slight."

"Do you have a craft?"

M'van tapped the knots on his shoulder, "Dragonhealer, Senior Journeyman."
He smiled. "That means I have a lot of responsibility, I can say a rider doesn't fly if necessary, and they'll listen to me, bluerider or not."

"What about mating flights, I mean..." THe lad trailed off. "Oh sorry, Dag's awake and he wants to eat, I'd better hurry." he smiled "Thank you."

"Any time, now you get back to that little one of yours."

T'kala barley heard the older blurider, he was out the door on his way to Dagreth.
