One Way to Get a Day Off

Writers: Chelle, Len
Date Posted: 6th August 2011

Characters: Chupsin, Halah
Description: Drudge Halah comes to Chupsin about a twisted ankle
Location: Amber Hills Hold
Date: month 3, day 9 of Turn 6

How the shards she managed to do it was beyond Halah, but all she
could think about as she hobbled to the Healers was how angry her
supervisor was going to be once she realized the young girl had left
off cleaning the bedsheets. But it couldn't be helped, she_had_to see
the healer to tend to her throbbing ankle. And for such a silly
thing! Slipping on a child's toy was beginner worker's stuff!
She sighed and knocked on the Healer's door.

The infirmary was open so that anyone could enter. Chupsin was
in the back but there was an apprentice available to register her and
find out what the problem was. Once he had her settled on a table
with ice wrapped around her ankle, the journeyman came to see
what the problem was. "Good day then. I hear you've injured your
ankle."

"I have indeed." She rolled her eyes at her own clumsiness.

"Tell me how," he said as he moved forward and gingerly turned her
limb over to look at the problem area. His hands softly probed as he
wanted to feel the bones.

She shook her head. "I was making the bed for one of the ladies of
the Hold and I forgot she has small children, and stepped on a toy
that was just by the bed, and slipped and, well, there you go." She
nodded down to her swollen ankle.

"Well it's not broken which is good, but you have turned it. You'll need
to ice it for a day and stay off it for at least two. Crutches?" he looked
at her easily, knowing she'd be given light duty.

"Really? Oh, my supervisor will be angry!" Even though secretly Halah
wasn't in the least bit. Two days off from lugging wet bedding about
and scrubbing all the time. Brilliant!

"Aye well she'll be even angrier if you mess it up to where you can't walk
for a month." He finished wrapping it back up with the ice. "I'll give you an
excuse."

"You're a kind man, thank you." Halah winced once with the ice
numbing her ankle, something she just didn't like. Already she was
making plans in her head as to what she could do with the free time.

"Sometimes I can be. Keep icing. I'll give you a bit of something for the pain.
And we'll get you a strong pair of crutches." He gestured to an apprentice that
began moving.

As he walked off, she briefly wondered if his reference to strong
crutches had anything to do with her weight. It wouldn't be the first
time she had to put up with snide little comments about it though.
She had been a small child but when puberty hit, so did the weight.
There wasn't anything she could do about it, or so she told herself.

Chupsin returned with a small pot of numbweed salve to rub on the ankle.
His apprentice stood by, holding a pair of sturdy wooden crutches that had
seen wear, but were well taken care of. "Please return these when you're done
and I want to see you in three days' time."

"Okay." She took the pot and slipped it into her pocket, before
standing up with the crutches. Taking a step she thought this
wouldn't be so bad. And if it gave her time off, all the better!
Smiling a tiny bit, she waited for him to give her the note to take to
her boss.

Chupsin's scrawl wasn't legible at times, but the point came across
and he placed his seal on it. Giving her the small missive, he watched her
progress on the crutches.
