K'ran's rank knots as a Wingleader weren't as good as Weyrleader
knots, but they still provided him an advantage when it came to
finding a seat in the crowded Dining Cavern, as it meant he could
either sit at one of the high table with a guest, or he would be able
to receive good seating at other tables as others deferred to his
choice. He and Jayzine rapidly found a nice pair of seats.
The flowers at their table were lovely and tropical. They reminded her
of Riverbluff and Jayzine's eyes misted for a moment. "Chaysea has
some wonderful ideas for decoration," she said as she looked around
the room. "Wonderful seats Wingleader," she smiled.
"We'll have good access to both food and listening to the Harpers, it
seemed a win-win to me," he said. "And yes, it's beautifully laid out
here. Though I loved what was done with the outside decorating for
Orlaith and Rogueth's hatching, with those hanging lanterns. It was a
novel choice."
"Thank you," she smiled. "Soiliera was kind enough to let me plan and
run that particular hatching."
"No wonder you were her choice for replacement. It was a fantastic
design. Dolphin Cove's layout wouldn't be quite right for it,
unfortunately," he mused aloud.
She smiled pleased at his praise. She still wasn't all that used to a
man praising her efforts. Of course, she'd been instrumental in the
adversarial nature of her own marriage. She'd set out to make
Fielton's life miserable she just hadn't counted on making herself
more miserable in the process. She took a deep breath and turned her
thoughts back to the present. "Thank you," she said. "No Dolphin Cove
isn't laid out the same but they've done a beautiful job. You know I
grew up with Cyradis. She was a year ahead of me in Harper School."
"I didn't know that. Did you know her well?" He didn't know much about
her earlier life.
"Fairly well," she said. "The Hall isn't all that large after all. Not
even before the earthquake. I should probably say hello before we go."
"I'm sure she'd like to see someone else she knows from before," he
said. "Is there anyone from River Bluff you'd like to make sure you
catch up with? I know you wanted to seek out Lanniya..."
"Of course I'd like to see them if we can but I'd also like to enjoy
the feast and dancing. Wouldn't you?"
"That's the part I'm looking forward to the most. I just know you may
not have seen friends in awhile and don't want to impinge on all of
your time." He made a mental note to himself to see if she'd want to
get to visit the Weyr more on restdays - of course she'd need to be
settling into her Hold position and making friends there, and yet
shouldn't she get to keep in touch with others and see them, too?
"I'm enjoying myself right where I am," she smiled. "Thank you for
your thoughtfulness, but I think I'll just go with the flow tonight
and say hi to the people I see rather than going to seek them out."
Privately she hoped for a return to Weyr life. It suited her better
than the Hold. Yet she wasn't going to impinge on the current
headwomen in any of the places that had rescued other Weyr residents.
That would only lead to difficulties. Emerald Falls needed her at the
moment and that was enough. Besides, she was enjoying the one on one
attention of her former Weyrleader.
"I just want to make sure you have a good time." Though she seemed to
be having one so far. "So tell me, what kind of dances do you enjoy?"
"All of them," she chuckled. "Former Hallmaster's wife," she pointed
to herself. "It was the one kind of real exercise I didn't get
reprimanded for."
"In that case, I'd be happy to partner you for at least one of each
type. Though, perhaps not the toss dance..." His shorter size made
that a bit more difficult.
"That's fine with me," she nodded. "I would love to dance with you."
He took another bite of the food on his plate and leaned back in his
chair. "It's a plan, then."
They had some more light conversation between them until it was time
for the dancing. As the floor was cleared and the music began, K'ran
stood up and extended his hand to Jayzine. "Shall we, my lady?"
She stood in one smooth movement and placed her fingers lightly on
his. "Delighted," she smiled.
"Then let's go," he said, leading her to the floor and wrapping an arm
around her waist.
Somehow the feeling of his hand on her waist almost burned through her
dress. She tried to steady the flutter of her heart but when they got
to the dance floor she couldn't help the glow in her eyes as she
turned into his arms.
