R'enh followed N'vanik out of the wing meeting and back toward his
office. Drills had gone well but he had a couple of notes he wanted to
share based on the performance of a couple of riders on his side of
the wing. Also, there was another matter he needed to discuss and
there was only one way to do it.
"So," he said as he sat across from his friend. "Saibra is pregnant."
"Oh? Well, congratulations," N'vanik said. It didn't _look_ like R'enh
had been timing it lately so hopefully he'd achieved his goal without
putting himself at risk again.
"Thank you," he smiled. "We're very happy. But I've been thinking and
I feel I need to be there for Saibra and for the baby." He spread his
hands in a helpless gesture. "I honestly never thought this would
It took a moment for the words to sink in. "Wait, you don't mean...
you're not leaving, are you?" N'vanik relied on R'enh beyond just his
"I'm so sorry," R'enh said. He really had been torn by the decision.
N'vanik held back a response. He was hurt and angry and something mean
was going to come out of his mouth. Finally he managed, "When?"
R'enh could tell N'vanik was unhappy. The tightness around the eyes
and thinning of his lips. "There is no rush," he said. "We can work
around the exact timing depending on your needs." He didn't want to
leave Dolphin Cove high and dry even without the fact that N'vanik was
his closest friend.
Selfishly, N'vanik wanted to keep him as long as possible, but that
wouldn't be fair. "I guess I need to start looking for a new
Wingsecond." How could he possibly replace R'enh?
"Probably a good idea," R'enh chuckled. "I'm hoping you'll still
invite me to your poker nights."
"I hope you'll still come to visit," N'vanik countered. He was losing
a Wingsecond, but his friend would still be around.
"Of course," R'enh grinned. "I'll even visit the Vintner Hall and get
us some good spirits."
"Well that's something to look forward to." N'vanik fiddled with a pen
on his desk. "Are they gonna give you a rank? You'd be wasted as a
"Yes," he smiled. "It just so happens they need a Wingleader."
That was something N'vanik could actually be happy about.
"Congratulations. You more than deserve it. Honestly I think I
might've been holding you back."
"Thank you," R'enh shook his head. "I've enjoyed being your 'second
N'vanik. I hope I can be as good a wingleader as you are."
"And maybe something more next time Chioneth Rises?"
"You never know what the future holds," R'enh grinned. "How about we
go find a nice place to drink?"
"Yeah, that sounds good." If N'vanik forced himself to focus on the
positives, he might be able to give R'enh the celebration he deserved.
R'enh clapped his friend on the shoulder. Then pulled him in for a
good shoulder thump. "I'm gonna miss you."
"Me too." N'vanik swallowed, trying to hold back tears.
R'enh got a little choked up too for a moment. "Drinks," he smiled.
"We can figure out the rest later."
