Description: K'ran interviews Jeyme for the Rapids' Wingthird position.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 1, day 16 of Turn 9
K'ran was sitting in his office, looking over the winglist. With
Anaeryth's class soon to graduate, he wanted to make sure that he knew
the current color balance of his wing so he could make the best pick
from the available weyrlings. He'd picked out one young man who'd done
well in the firestone delivery who he had his eye on, but he certainly
intended to request more than a single new rider at the meeting.
**I'll need to watch their drills and performance in this sevenday's
Fall,** he realized.
A knock on the door interrupted his chain of thought. Quickly he
jotted down a note about it, then set down the pencil. "Come in," he
called.
A greenrider entered wearing a Far Island Weyr insignia on her flight
jacket. Her sable hair was cut chin length and neatly tucked behind
her ears.
"Wingleader K'ran," she held out her hand, "I am Jeyme. We exchanged
messages about your Wingthird position."
"Wingrider Jeyme, my duty to your green," he said as he shook her
hand. "Please, take a seat, I've been looking forward to this chat."
"As have I," she said, sitting. She'd heard of K'ran's name when he
had been Weyrleader of River Bluff but she had never met the man.
Some people might jump straight to the meat of the interview, but
K'ran liked to get to know people he'd be working with better, first.
"Tell me a little about yourself and why you're interested," he
invited.
"Well, I'm twenty-seven, I Impressed Quinneth here at Dolphin Cove, I
left some time ago and have been at Far Island. It was a good place to
learn and experience new things, but I am ready to be back at my home
Weyr." Jeyme crossed one leg over the other as she spoke, "I am
organized and thorough, which I think are good attributes for a
Wingthird. I want to do more than just wingrider duties, I like having
work to do." When her children were with their foster mother it was
nice to have duties to fill her time.
Her report was nice and efficient, and K'ran appreciated that.
"Organized, thorough, and a little bit ambitious. Those are definitely
qualities I favor in my staff," he said, but he added a smile so she
knew he was sincere.
"You were in the queen's wing here. What level do you fly at Far
Island?" Rapids was working a mid-to-lower, below Cyclone at the mid
altitude and above Volcano as the lowest.
"I am in a mid-to-upper Wing at Far Island. Quinneth and I are usually
in the center of the formation behind the Wingleader." The older,
slower dragons were in the rear of the Wing, sweeping and flaming
anything missed by the front of the Wing.
"You won't think that being in mid-to-lower is a demotion, will you?" he asked.
"No, it doesn't matter to me the altitude, Thread is Thread." Jeyme
had flown at the lowest altitude, with the Queen's Wing, and she'd
flown higher than K'ran's Wing, while both positions fought Thread,
the jobs had both presented their own challenges.
So far, he was finding her attitude sensible and refreshing.
"Ideally, what would you want to be doing in a Wingthird position? Are
there any concerns you have about your ability to do the job?"
"Well, I feel like I would really enjoy the administrative paperwork
side of the Wingthird position, honestly." She knew that might sound a
bit odd, since many dragonriders seemed to enjoy the physical side of
the job better. "I think my only concern would be that I Impressed
here and some of the wingriders who are older than me might still see
me as a kid."
"I think you and I might be the only two around here to enjoy all of
the hidework. Definitely the only two in Rapids," K'ran said with a
laugh at her first statement. "As for your youth putting off some of
the riders, if they have a problem with you wearing the knots, that's
their issue. I had to learn that lesson myself once."
Overall, he thought Jeyme was going to be a good fit for the wing.
"Here's my thoughts. While Rapids has just had F'lin and I, I've been
doing the hidework myself, and letting him focus on resolving drill
issues and wing disputes. Part of that was because I was out
recovering and stuck on desk duty, and part of that is temperament.
With you in the mix, I think we can balance the workload a little more
fairly."
Jeyme let the beginnings of a smile show. She hadn't been sure that
K'ran would want her, and if he didn't, then her hopes of becoming a
Wingthird would have been dashed completely. "Thank you, sir."
K'ran reached into a drawer under the desk, then frowned, closed it,
opened another one, and found what he was looking for. He pulled out
the Wingthird knots and passed them across the desk to Jeyme.
"Congratulates to you and Quinneth," he said with a smile. "It's okay
if it will take you a few days to get moved over and settled in. Are
you bringing family?"
"I have two children that I will be bringing with me, one is four and
the other almost two." Jeyme answered, taking the rank knots and
clasping them between her hands. "Thank you for this opportunity, I
really appreciate it."
"Four and two, that's lovely," he said with a nod. "I'm looking
forward to working with you. Drop by my office as soon as you are
settled in."
