The news of Panitath's gold egg spread rapidly around the Weyr. All
clutching news was passed on with excitement, but a golden egg was a
particular level of special interest for all of the Weyr. All of the
Weyrs dragons wanted another gold to be there, given their importance
as leaders and egg-layers. The bronze dragons were particularly
excited, as she'd be a future potential mate for them.

When the egg hatched, that would be four golds in total. Dolphin Cove
could physically support four queens, and might even be able to handle
a fifth - it would depend on Panitath's comfort level with that many
other golds. She was unquestionably the senior gold both in Turns and
authority, and neither of the younger ones could be her rival.

Kapera worried Riyanth would soon feel crowded by other golds. She'd
responded so poorly to being one of five queens at Windswept Islands.
Of course, Windswept's golds had all been over three Turns old and all
hale, whereas Anaeryth and the new queen were young. That might make
it more bearable for a bit, but still she worried about the long-term.

There were short-term concerns to consider first. Like how Cyradis
wanted to handle training the female Candidates, who were surely
incredibly excited, and then the new goldrider when she Impressed. So
it was that Kapera showed up at Cyradis' office the morning after the
clutching, some notes in hand and ready to talk.

"Good morning Kapera," Cyradis welcomed her with a smile.

"Good morning, Weyrwoman. The Weyr's abuzz with the news of Panitath's
clutch. She must be very proud," Kapera said politely, squashing any
jealousy she and Riyanth had of it down very firmly.

Cyradis chuckled. "She is... very," she nodded. "I can't stay away for
long though, she gets cranky."

"I understand that feeling," Kapera said with a small laugh. Broody
golds were such a pain.

"The female Candidates are all abuzz hoping they're the one that's
going to Impress her. I know the Weyrlingstaff has done a fine job
with the regular training of Candidates and weyrlings, but a gold will
require more. Is there extra training you want to do with the girls
now?" she asked.

Then, deciding that sounded too hesitant and waiting for approval, she
offered, "I was thinking perhaps small groups of them shadowing the
goldriders on our duty rounds, to see how much actual work comes with
the shiny hide."

"That is a good idea Kapera," she nodded. She was very pleased that
the younger weyrwoman had thought through their needs like she had.
"We can get the female candidates together "It also might give us an
idea of their personalities and maybe who we think might Impress our
new queen."

Kapera was happy Cyradis liked the idea. "As for figuring out how
they'd do with authority or work with each others, I was thinking we'd
see what the Weyrlingmasters have in mind and then see if we want to
do additional lessons."

Cyradis nodded, "We'll have a meeting tomorrow at lunch with K'sedel
and whoever else he chooses to bring. He's going to know if we have
appropriate candidates or whether we need to send out the searchers."

Kapera had seen one of Riyanth's hatchling dragonets die for lack of a
partner, heard the increasingly despairing wails of a green who
couldn't find a lifemate. She knew that they had more Candidates than
eggs that were laid, but that didn't mean she didn't want to make sure
Searches were happening. However, maybe Cyradis

"I know we acquired some of the River Bluff Candidates as part of the
reshuffling, but wouldn't we want the Searchriders to go out anyway to
make sure we maximize the choice for the dragonets?" Kapera asked. "Or
were you thinking of doing something more specialized for gold
candidates?"

"Well, there is no question we have enough Candidates. I just want to
make certain we have the quality we need. I'm certain Chaysea has some
information on them and maybe some insight." She rubbed a finger along
her lower lip as she thought. "I guess we just need to get to know
them."

"A month isn't a ton of time to get to know... 20-something girls?"
Kapera guessed, knowing they had quite a number both weyrbred and
Searched to accomodate the everpresent need for green Candidates.

"Outside of having them shadow us, we could... supervise a surprise
drill the Weyrlingmasters throw on them. See who steps up as a leader
and who shrinks back?" she offered

"Yes," she nodded pleased more than she could say by the obvious
thought Kapera had invested in this subject. "Also, let's have a
reception of sorts. It would work in the council room here. Sort of
an informal way to see how the girls interact with one another?"

"I think that would be delightful. Lanniya should be here as well to
get a sense of them, that way the girls can meet all of the
goldriders."

Cyradis nodded at that. "Will you arrange it with Chaysea?"

"I'd be happy to speak with her about that today." she said. "Are
there any other changes we'll be making with the addition of the new
gold?"

"Actually," she smiled. "I believe we may be sending Lanniya to
Dragonsfall. You know she's been seeing the brownrider from there?
Well according to Pierka, he's asked her to Weyrmate."

"So she'd go there instead of him come here?" Kapera asked in
surprise. She would have imagined that a lessor color would have moved
to suit the queen. It seemed as though Lanniya had just arrived, and
they'd be losing her useful talent to hear all of the dragons.

"It could go either way actually, but with a new gold egg on the sands
here it makes sense to send her there instead. I know Panitath and she
won't allow overcrowding of golds to happen in her Weyr. Besides," she
smiled. "They only have two at the moment so this would make for a
good balance. Don't you think?"

"It would be worse with four, if they were all full adults," Kapera
said. Anaeryth and the new one were still very junior juniors, but
still. "I suppose you haven't had time to ask Saibra about it yet,
since this is a new development?"

She nodded, "I also want to ask Lanniya how she feels about it.
She doesn't really know either Saibra or Teseada." She shrugged. "But
I have to say, I haven't seen anything of the rebellious rider I was
warned of when she came. She's been steady and well behaved. So I have
no qualms sending her to Dragonsfall with my warm recommendations."

"I agree that she's been doing very well. I wonder if it was just a
personality conflict between herself and her Weyrwoman? Or an
overreaction to the one incident." And she hadn't repeated anything
like it since.

"I think she and Teseada might get along well," Kapera added.

"Probably a bit of both," Cyradis smiled. "I think she would too."
