K'deren

G'ran stood on the beach, his hair still damp and watched Mareloth frolic in the waves. The sun was setting, offering a spectacular view.
"I thought I Impressed a dragon, not a dolphin with wings," he remarked drolly.

"He looks like a weyrling," K'deren said as he watched his children and Donneth play in the water.

"He acts like a one too," G'ran replied. "Hard to believe his eight Turns old, scarred veteran of many Thread Falls."

"Donneth is old enough to know better, but with the kids about he forgets himself."

"That happens to Mareloth too. He so loves our trips to Topaz Sea Hold, where all my nephews and nieces just swarm him," G'ran chuckled lightly.

"It's a good job they like children, can you imagine if they didn't?" K'deren could see Deralie climbing up Donneth's tail to try and get up to his neck ridges where she'd sit with him if they were flying.

"Yes, you would have to count your children every evening and keep a very sharp eye on them," G'ran grinned.

"Maybe that's the scary story to tell them when they misbehave. The dragon who ate his rider's children!" K'deren said, humour obvious in his voice.

G'ran laughed. "Tell that to my ex wife and I'll never get to see my daughter again."

"Do you see much of her?"

"Not nearly enough," G'ran replied with sad sigh.

"You could bring her here for a visit, if she's old enough."

"She's old enough, she's nine and trust me, I've tried. Her mother doesn't let me. She's afraid I wouldn't return her to home."

"Hmmm," K'deren thought for a moment. "I could ask Cyradis to have a word if you thought it would help." Most of the holders would listen to a gold rider.

"She's welcome to try," G'ran said with dry voice but he was feeling rather uneasy with the direction the discussion was going into. He was very private man. He could only confide with K'deren because he had known the Wingsecond for many Turns.

"At least she hasn't stopped you seeing your daughter." K'deren knew that would be the worst possible scenario. "Maybe when she's a little older she can make her own mind up."

"If she doesn't let me see her when I visit Topaz Sea hold, I'll stop sending her any extra marks I earn and she's too greedy for that," G'ren said rather cynically. Being former guard, he did often see the worst in people.

"Did she not want to come to the weyr when you impressed?" Most women, in K'deren's experience either jumped at the idea, or were able to be persuaded to at least try it. Although there were still some who thought it was a den of iniquity and immorality and flat out refused.

"No, she didn't want to come and I asked her, begged her. She also found herself a new man pretty quickly. She was remarried before I was even finished with the weyrlingtraining," yes, he was bitter about it.

"Is your daughter happy though?" asked K'deren. That was the main thing.

"She seems to be, I can't blame the care her mother gives and the stepfather is a good man," G'ran replied. Based on what he's seen and what his family had told (his siblings did keep an eye on her), he had no concerns about her upbringing.

"So long as she knows that people love her."

"She does that," G'ran said. "I have fairly large family back at the Topaz Sea hold. They look after her too."

"Does she know she has the right to ask to come here as a candidate, once she's old enough?" The Weyr tradition that a rider's child could stand without formal search had been there for long enough that most probably thought of it as law by now. "Or haven't you talked to her about it yet."

"I've mentioned it to her. but she still has few Turns before she's old enough." G'ran replied.

"Then you never know, maybe one day she'll be bathing a little green or gold while you stand here and watch."

"That would be lovely," G'ran replied. The sun was fully set now and it was getting chilly. "I believe it's supper time now," he remarked. **Mareloth, time to get out of there and dry off before retiring for the night,** he told his dragon. With little reclutance the bronze returned to the shore.

"It is," K'deren waved Deralie and the others to come back, while calling Donneth back. "I better get this little lot dried off, or Cyradis will have my hide for dragging sand into the weyr."

"Tell her my greetins and thank you for the talk," G'ran replied and deftly sidestepped the water spray when Mareloth got up and shook himself like a canine.

"I'll be sure to pass them on," K'deren said as he reached for a towel to pass to his daughter.

"See you tomorrow then," G'ran said.
